"City" of San Francisco

Unbiased and Unsolicited: San Francisco is California's definitive city. Read about what I have encountered. It may help your next visit.

Golden Gate Bridge
Given its population density and metropolitan ambience, San Francisco fits the "city" description better than any other place in California. Its topography, location (on the tip of a peninsula), and scenery supplies innumerable views to behold (a paradise for amateur and expert photographers). There are many fun neighborhoods, from the chic Marina District to the eclectic Haight to bustling Market Street. As with any city, there are some downsides. Here are a few: lots of transients, driving is a chore, and finding a place to park is a frustrating experience (and can be very expensive).

Things to see (or do): Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Marina District, SBC Park (Giants Baseball), Cliff House, Market Street, Golden Gate Park, Little Italy, North Beach, etc.

Things to pass on: Cable Cars, Mission District (rough area), and Candle Stick Point.

I still have much more to see. Have fun.

Quick Tips:

When making a day trip for downtown shopping, park at the Fifth and Mission parking garage. It is in a great location and is fairly priced, safe, and easy to find.

Best Way To Get Around:

Driving may be the best if you can deal with hills and do not mind searching for parking. Muni and BART good ideas. Downtown taxis are plentiful.

Restaurant

This is a quick and inexpensive Italian option. What to like about it: reasonably priced quality fare, substantial portions, clean amenities, contemporary decor, and more often than not, a responsive staff. I enjoy the classic capellini pomodoro.

Restaurant

Given the location, on top of Macy’s at Union Square, it provides an excellent view of the city below. It is a chain restaurant, so it lacks a local flair; nevertheless, the menu is big, the portions are large, and the taste rarely disappoints. I enjoy the Shrimp Po’ Boy, Shrimp and Bacon Sandwich, or Orange Chicken.

Attraction

There is an interesting piece of history a boat ride away. I am not a history buff of any sort; however, this place has an odd appeal. The audio tour was done very well, giving one without much imagination a feel for what it was like when the facility was operational. Arrange boat reservations 1 week in advance.

Attraction

The Golden Gate is an engineering marvel and the symbol for Bay Area. It is free to look at and is quite a spectacle. It is something not to be missed.

Attraction

There is not enough nostalgia to justify a long wait. Check and see what the wait time is before you start waiting. Lines are slower than they appear. Spend valuable time with other more entertaining pursuits.
