Mayan Palace Acapulco

A January 2005 trip to Acapulco by LAINE35

I had a wonderful week at the Mayan Palace. The grounds and the service were fabulous. The rooms were just okay--very dated.

Best Things About the Resort:
The grounds were lovely. The resort is not in downtown Acapulco, which was great. I didn't hear of anyone getting sick. We drank the water and ate the ice, fruit, vegetables, and everything.

Resort Experience:
The resort was great. If you want to spend time on the beach, they will bring out a minimum of two large umbrellas, two chairs, and a small table. Then there are waiters who come around the beach and take your orders for drinks or food and bring it back to you. That was great. They have the same service poolside, as well.

I had a couple of problems with my room, and they were very responsive. Of course, at times it was frustrating trying to communicate with employess that spoke only Spanish or broken English.

The water park was great, but it's about $12 per adult, per day and $9 for kids. Because of that, we only went one day. The spa and the gym are also expensive. We played tennis for an hour, and it cost $27. Golf was $135. Food was also expensive. We took a trip to Wal-Mart when we first got there to stock up, and it was well worth it.

They have an Internet cafe with four computers, so you can hook up to email. That was great. It was $1.50 for 15 minutes. That was the best deal going.

We were very disappointed in the accommodations, however. The resort itself is gorgeous, but the rooms were dated. The picture on the website was nothing like the actual room. If you can stay in the Grand Mayan, do it. Those rooms are fabulous.

We had a large living room with two sofas. One had a twin-size trundle. There was a dining table with four chairs and a small kitchen. The bathroom was small, but very nice, with a marble tub/shower. The bedroom was separate, with a king bed. Unfortunately, the bedroom was on the street side, so we couldn't open up the windows and hear the ocean. In fact, the traffic noise was bothersome. It wasn't so bad for us because we are early risers, but if you like to sleep in, it would be a problem. We were in the back building. Our view was still nice. I think all the views are pretty much the same.

All the food at the Mayan Palace restaurants was good. The Moroccan buffet at the buffet restaurant in the Grand Mayan was very good. It was all expensive. Expect to pay $30 per person for a buffet. My family of three dropped $100 on dinner every night. I thought they would have more fresh fish, but they only had salmon (which I know didn't come out of the waters off Acapulco) and sea bass, which is my favorite fish but was not fresh.
