Pembrokshire (which is known in Welsh language as Sir Benfro), a picturesque corner of the South Wales, is the county home to the largest cathedral in Wales. This fact may come as a surprise to those who, like yours truly, embarked on a diligent study of the various guidebooks prior to departure. It certainly surprised me, seeing that St. David’s is officially considered to be the smallest city in Britain. Indeed it is so off the beaten path that a traveller without his or her own means of transportation and not inclined to use buses will not be able to get there, since no railway link serves the place. The story starts in the 6th century, when St. David, who later became the patron saint of Wales, was born nearby. When he decided to establish a monastery, this remote region was, understandably, his first choice. So it was that a church was founded where now stands the cathedral. As St. David became a saint, his resting place naturally became an issue, and his relics were buried in a special casket at the church—a casket that's still there.
