In the Foothills of the Southern Alps

A January 2005 trip to Rakaia by J Hamilton

As a great base for exploring the outstanding local scenery, the Mount Hutt Lodge was an ideal resort for us.

Best Things Nearby:
There were rivers, lakes, mountains, and the wide-open Canterbury Plains.

Best Things About the Resort:
The magnificent and ever-changing views were the best. As the weather and light patterns changed, so did the view from our apartment.

Resort Experience:
To enjoy this resort to the fullest extent, it is necessary to have your own transportation. But with this facility, everyday can be a new adventure. There are drives to be made in all directions to a variety of locations.

And talking of locations, this is very much part of "Middle Earth," as several scenes of the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy were filmed in the neighbourhood. During our stay we went for local hikes along the Rakaia Gorge, starting from only a couple of hundred metres from the resort entrance. Then we drove to the Mount Hutt Reserve for some hikes into the dense bush-clad slopes of the foothills. We also drove to Lakes Clearwater and Coleridge and to tiny Lake Georgina for more relaxing picnics. At these remote places, fishing was the most extreme sport on offer.

Besides the natural beauty of the area, there were also some historically interesting towns to visit on the Canterbury Plains. The closest to the Resort was Methven, but with the good straight roads, it didn't take long to reach Rakaia or Ashburton either
