Winter Sun in Cyprus

A December 2004 trip to Cyprus by Timone

This was a week of sun over the festive period to get away from the cold and rainy UK and see the historical sites of Cyprus.

Tomb of the Kings and Pafos Archeological Site are World Heritage Sites and wonderful places to spend a few hours. The Old Town of Pafos has a great marketplace, ideal for buying those souvenirs.

Quick Tips:

Walk in the wintertime and be sure to visit the Old Town.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking in the wintertime is practical, but in the summer the bus is best, as they run frequently and are cheap.

Hotel | "Riu Cypria Maris"

This hotel is a 30-minute walk from the harbour, but it is in a nice, quiet area, albeit surrounded by other hotels. Across the street there is a small supermarket and a bank, plus a small café/bar. The hotel itself is four-star and beautiful. It is decked out with white and dark green wood, which doesn't sound good, but in fact looks impressive.

The bar is ship-themed and so has a huge wheel on the ceiling and is reasonably priced for a hotel. The restaurant serves wonderful food in buffet style each breakfast and dinner.

The staff is incredibly helpful. Both the outdoor pool and the indoor pool are clean and great for an afternoon swim.

The rooms are ample in size and have all the facilities you'd expect of a four-star hotel. The chamber maids do amazing things with the towels, making them into swans and doves on the bed, which is a nice touch. All in all, you can't go wrong with this hotel.

I'm not usually impressed by British theme pubs when I'm away, but it looked okay from the outside and we were starving. As it happened, the food was great. There was a huge choice of dishes, and we settled on a bacon, lettuce, and tomato pita, which was huge, along with a cold drink.

The service was fast, helpful, and polite, and the pub was pretty busy considering it was after the usual lunchtime. I imagine in the evening the place is very busy, as they have a good range of British beer on tap and show football, but during the day it's good for a budget lunch.
