Quote: We decided to stay at the Jaguar Reef Lodge/Coco Plum Resort near Hopkins, Belize. Belize has wonderful activities, such as snorkeling/diving, jungle/wildlife hikes, tours of Mayan ruins, and just enjoying the culture and friendly people. I really enjoyed the trip, but bad weather and sand flies certainly are distracting!

Barrier Reef: Although we were limited to snorkeling (due to an ear infection) and rough seas, we enjoyed our stay for 2 nights at the Coco Plum Cay Resort (five cabins on a small island). We really enjoyed the totally remote and quiet setting with a sunrise/sunset, wildlife (Bird Island is just a kayak away), and the ability to unwind. Mayan Ruins: We had an excellent tour of the Cahal Pech and Xunantunich ruins. Cruise a River: We cruised the Sitte River and really enjoyed the wildlife, from the excellent iguanas and crocodiles to a host of bird life, such as herons, vultures, etc. Wildlife Preserve: Spend a day hiking through the jungle at the Jaguar Preserve. On the plus side, it's a great location with a fine beach and well-cared-for surroundings. The staff was very friendly, and we were able to do many things from this spot. They also own the Coco Plum Caye, with five huts that were quite nice and remote. The food was better at Coco Plum, of all things, and much quieter. We did not realize that families were big here, which we prefer not to have. Rooms were BIG and clean, but there were some older items in the room. Biggest problem: sandflies that do not QUIT--but I think that is a problem in most places in Belize.

As one of the anticipated minor trips on our trip to Belize, we were extremely pleased with the tour of the Cahal Pech and Xunantunich Mayan ruins. In an all-day tour, we drove to these two locations and were very impressed with the experience.

Cahal Pech was an excellent introductory course to Mayan ruins, as it displayed several plazas and temples. Moving on to Xunantunich, we were amazed at the size (and power!) of the primary temple and plaza area with some relief work restored.

Although probably not the stature of Tikal, they were impressive and worth the ride. Both also had a small but excellent museum attached to the sites.
