Group vacation in Tortola

A January 2003 trip to Tortola by Onda Porch

An extended family group of 14 invaded Tortola for a week of the usual depravity. Being from New England, we are all "thrifty," so the "good" stuff is generally the good-value stuff. We had "slugs" and "go-getters" along, so there was a wide range of experiences.

THE BEACH is the place to be. We also enjoyed our hike in the national park rain forest. Our kayak brought us to many different and interesting snorkeling spots.

Quick Tips:

Check out the Sebastian rum. It is special. Bomba's without the full moon party is a bomb.

Best Way To Get Around:

Rent a car if you are there for more than a couple days. There is plenty to check out yourself, and the views are like driving through a postcard. Be especially careful driving in the rain. The steep hills get very slick.

Facilities:

The website was a fair representation of the facility. Our group put eight in the large villa and six others in the smaller units. All were clean and in good repair. Furnishings were showing a little wear and tear. Cleaning took place daily while the group was out and about.

The bedrooms were large and comfortable. One looked out onto the beach. Bathrooms were also large, with a tiled shower big enough to use as a bedroom (if you know what I mean). The view from the beach just outside our door was superior.

All of us ate in the villa, and there was plenty of room. Mostly, though, we hung out on the large porch overlooking Francis Drake Channel. You are steps from the water across a very clean, sandy beach--quiet and private.

This is a fairly small operation, and the staff and management are attentive and accommodating.

Price:
Our package
-7 days
-3 dinners cooked in our villa
-Massage
Cost: about $2800/couple

Suggestions/Recommendations:
Rent the car for touring the island and grocery/beverage runs.
Rent the kayaks only for a day or two.
Explore the rum distilleries, which offer special and unique flavors--not just that commercial stuff.

Restaurant

The location is perfect, with views of the sunsets over Frenchmen’s Cay and St. Thomas if you choose the outdoor patio or get the right window seat.

The food was fresh, with most interest being in the citrus seafood dishes. The menu gave us all plenty to choose from. The bar is THE place to hang. Get a Painkiller and keep the tin cup—an easy souvenir decision.

The highly advertised rum was okay, but we had other favorites. I'll leave it to you to explore and decide for yourself. That's more than half the fun.

The bar can be quite an event in itself, with rum drinks like the famous Painkiller served in various potencies. Careful, they can sneak up on you.

Service was a little better than "island time." Most meals, but not all, were delivered as ordered.

Prices were probably a little higher than you would pay in many other places in the area for the same basic meal. However, the small premium is justified by the special ambience.

Dockside Tortola, British Virgin Islands

It's not just a meal with live music. This is what you come to the Virgin Islands for.

Atmoshpere: Foxy's is on the beach, in the sand, among the trees. Have cocktails in the bar or hang out in the swing seats or hammocks. You can check out the thousands of souvenirs donated to the rafters from visitors around the world and add your own. Around dinner time, the band shows up. After dinner, the band gets into serious hot, sexy, happy fun. Do not stay off the dance floor if you want the full-package Foxy experience.

Dinner: We showed up hungry and without reservations. Bad idea. Call ahead the morning of your visit. We kind of slimed into the food lines after the paying customers had their fill and were charged a few bucks. The food was worth the price, and the one-price-fits-all buffet was ample. Cost was average to high for a buffet.

The Bar: What is in a "Painkiller" that makes one so happy? This reasonably priced local concoction produced a modest glow that hung around all evening. Most surprising, there was none of the dreaded and anticipated hangover the next day. There's MOJO in that mix.

Conclusion: You may run into other recommendations, and there are plenty of places around to take on Foxy's overflow, but don't be talked out of it--Foxy's is the stop you want to make.
