In a New York State of Mind

A September 2004 trip to New York by agt3007

I have just returned from a wonderful trip to The Big Apple, or New York City. If you are looking for a vacation or even an extended weekend getaway in a place that has high energy, cultural diversity, happening nightlife, and the best shopping anywhere, then New York is your kind of town.

Times Square
We stayed at the Hotel Carter, which is not recommended for the squeamish types. The Hotel Carter has the best location, 2 blocks from Time Square and a block from the subway station. The hotel it self is a no-thrills kind of place. You get a basic, small room with a private bath. There is no maid or room service. You must go to the front desk daily to get clean towels, but for $89 per night, I can ride an elevator down to get some towels.

Little Italy
Now, let me tell you about New York! Everywhere I went, there were restaurants serving every kind of ethnic food: Turkish, Japanese, Ethiopian, Italian (Carmine’s in Times Square is fantastic, and so is Vincent’s in Little Italy), and on and on. If you've ever dreamed about eating your way around the globe, you can definitely do it in NYC, and Little Italy has festivals for every season with lots of food.

Story/Tip

Here comes the Train
We flew into Newark airport. I found the airport to be very clean, safe, and easy to get around in. There is a direct train that runs from the airport into New York Penn Station. The New Jersey Transit train was very reasonable, at $11.55 one-way from Newark Airport. There is plenty to see on the 30-minute train ride. The train passes through New Jersey wetlands with waterfowl resting and feeding all around, through urban city areas, and just before you enter the tunnel to cross the Hudson River into New York, you get the best view of the Manhattan skyline!
On the Train to Penn Station
When we arrived at NY Penn Station, we took a taxi to our hotel. You can also hop on the subway from Penn Station; you can take the Q, N, or R subway lines to Times Square, where our hotel was located.

But we wanted to travel above ground to soak in the sights. I am glad we did because it was an adventure riding in the back of that taxi as we weaved in and out of traffic, narrowly missing other cars and pedestrians. All the while my cab driver was screaming and honking at everyone.

The subway system in NYC is very easy to understand and very safe. Seven dollars buys you an unlimited subway pass for 1 day.
