A beautiful, rugged coastline with incredible views, great food, friendly locals, and a relaxed atmosphere, Bodega Bay has become our ideal extended weekend vacation destination to relax, rejuvenate, and renew our souls.

1) Bodega Head offers breathtaking views and is a prime spot for whale-watching when in-season. The cliffs are dramatic, and the flower-lined trails are beautiful. Make your way along the cliffside trail, heading south to get a view of a nearby island that is home to several hundred seals and sea lions. You'll hear them barking before you see them.

2) Goat Rock is a fun place for soaking in several elements at once—watch seals play offshore, kayak the surrounding waters, find sea glass among the pebbles and sand, fly a kite, have a picnic, or just sit and contemplate the waves.

3) Armstrong Woods is located near Guerneville and is a great place to just wander among the giant redwoods. Excellent, easy hiking paths. Good place to go when it’s raining, as the trees block out the weather.

4) Occidental has several cute shops and is worth a trip if you've got the time.

5) Dillon Beach, just south of Bodega Bay, has the best sand we've encountered in the area. Cool tide pools, too.

6) Highway 1 is an experience in itself, with incredible views up and down it. The best way to enjoy this road is to take your time and stop to enjoy the various beaches and vistas.

Quick Tips:

We recommend Vacation Rentals USA if you're looking for a home to rent instead of a hotel (which we prefer). You can stay in an oceanfront home and experience Bodega Bay at its best. They offer three nights for the price of two in the off-season (as of 2004) and have a few pet-friendly homes. Bring a camera and binoculars. Don't go expecting the plethora of activities offered at some oceanside communities (like Monterey or Santa Cruz, for example). This is a place to relax. There are golfing and spa options.

Best Way To Get Around:

A car is a must.

We recommend Vacation Rentals USA if you're looking for a home to rent instead of a hotel in Bodega Bay (which we prefer). You can stay in an oceanfront home and experience Bodega Bay at its best. They have unbeatable views, some with beach access. They also offer golf course homes, bluff homes with a view, and creekside homes. The oceanfront homes, however, really put you in vacation mode. The homes are fully furnished and have a variety of features available. Cliff Cottage is beautiful and elegant, with a wood-burning fireplace. Nichols has a great hot tub with a wonderful ocean view. If you check out their website, you can view all the homes before you go.

Lucas Wharf Deli

Restaurant

Lucas Wharf Deli, not to be confused with Lucas Wharf Restaurant next door, is a bare-bones seafood deli, but well worth the trip if you're in the mood for excellent fish and chips. One order is usually enough for both of us to share. Be sure to order some of their homemade cocktail sauce along with it.

River's End

Restaurant

River's End is a perfect mix of casual and elegant. The food is excellent, as is the view, overlooking the coast and the river. Keep an eye out for seals playing. The biggest draw at River's End, however, is their clam chowder. It is the best we've ever had, infused with fresh herbs. It is delicious. They also have yummy bread, and the butter is presented in a shell. Another highlight is one of their appetizers--a crab-stuffed filo pastry. Their bar has a fairly extensive wine list, and you can eat at the bar. The only downside is that, during peak hours, parking can be difficult. We recommend going for lunch.

Brisas Del Mar

Restaurant

This restaurant doesn't have much for decor or service, unfortunately, but it makes up for it with its food. If you're in the mood for (primarily) Mexican food, but with a fresh seafood flair, this is a unique dining experience. Try one of their many Mexican beers as you sample everything from coconut shrimp to linguini and clams to classic Mexican dishes served with crab, shrimp, fish, and more.

Bodega Head offers breathtaking views and is a prime spot for whale-watching in season (be sure to bring your binoculars and watch for the spouting water). The cliffs are dramatic, and the flower-lined trails are beautiful. Make your way along the cliffside trail, heading south for about half a mile, to get a view of a nearby island that is home to several hundred seals and sea lions. You'll hear them barking before you see them.

Armstrong Woods

Activity

Armstrong Woods is the home of several giant redwoods. It's very peaceful and amazing to see. The hiking paths are easy and wind in several directions, making for some good exploring. You can even ride horses through here. Armstrong Woods is also a good place to go when it's raining, as the trees block out the weather for the most part. If you can tear yourself away from the coast for a while, this is a quick, rewarding getaway.
