Quote: Christmas 2003 -- Thirty people sat in our dining room, and everyone was getting drunk, (including me)! I was exhausted from cleaning, cooking, and shopping. This definitely was NOT the way to celebrate Christmas! So, we announced that in 2004 we were running away for Christmas!

But we also wanted to spend some time in the outdoors, enjoying winter in the high desert. Friends had told us about the beautiful hiking trails at Picacho Peak, located about 35 miles northwest of Tucson (on I-10 between Tucson and Casa Grande)...Read More

My stomach was starting to complain as I glanced in the window of a cracker box-size café. I was hoping to find a suitable place for lunch after a hard morning of antique shopping. Through the window I spied flashing red and yellow lights beckoning! A handsome old red-and-gold Wurlitzer jukebox stood just inside the door of the Horseshoe Café. "Gosh! I haven’t seen a jukebox like that since the ‘60s," I said to Dear Husband and grabbed his elbow to steer him inside. The antique wurlitzer and a large curving counter occupied most of the main dining room, and I was pleased when we were directed to the smaller area toward the rear. We couldn’t believe our good fortune...Read More

We love flowers and raise orchids, iris, verbena, lilies, and other varieties of gorgeous blossoms at our home in California. However, since we are now living part-time in Arizona, we’ve learned to appreciate and respect the cacti, succulents, and other gems which comprise the flora of the Southwest high desert. Therefore, Picacho Peak seemed a likely destination for a short stay during our Christmas runaway -- a place to enjoy the desert flora and fauna in December! Picacho translates from Spanish into "peak or point;" it is, therefore, evident how this prominent landmark, visible for miles in the Sonoran Desert, received its name. Located at an altitude of 3,400 fe...Read More

Multi-colored candles flickered--the only light within the small chapel. Perhaps 100 people crowded into the tiny chapel at St. David for Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. We’d not attended Midnight Mass since our kids were young! "Silent Night" drifted from the choir as everyone kneeled to acknowledge the birth of Christ. As we left the chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we stopped to admire the life-sized nativity scene. It would have been obscene to take photos on Christmas Eve while everyone was enjoying the true spirit of Christmas. We decided to return to the monastery after Christmas to take photos of this beautiful retreat. Holy Trinity is a Benedictine m...Read More
