We had just moved to Virginia and wanted to find a ski location close to DC. Layout and amenities, plus great accommodations slope-side, ensured we (a family with two teen boys) will return.

This two-bedroom condo (unit 116U) had full kitchen. We shared a no-charge washer/dryer with the lower unit (a real plus to dry clothes after a day on the slopes). The master bedroom had queen bed, shower/tub, and a single sink. Not a lot of dresser space. The second bedroom had twin beds. The second bath had a shower and separate, very large whirlpool tub. There was a sleeper sofa in the living room with gas fireplace, as well as a three-season deck facing the slopes. The hotel is quiet and convenient to slopes (though not ski in/out). No more than six are allowed in a unit.

Kyoto

Restaurant

Japanese steak house. I went with my family of four and was pleasantly surprised at sushi bar options. Staff was very friendly and efficient. They had pre-made chopsticks for the kids with the rubber bands that hold the non-eating ends. We had some fun with a variation on the steaming Mt. Fuji of onions rings--this one erupted!

Carry-out or delivery (cash only for deliveries!). Decent pizza. Not Chicago-style deep dish, but good hand-thrown thin crust. Very convenient after a day on the slopes when you don't want to venture out for dinner. Also has subs and pasta.

Shoneys

Restaurant

What can we say? A Shoney's is a Shoney's is a Shoney's. There is easy access from Highway 33, which leads to Massanutten. If you’re looking for a quick family lunch/dinner, this is it. Don't go around 11am, as you'll get caught between the breakfast and lunch buffets, when the staff is working to make the changeover, making the wait for food a bit longer than you would expect.

Activity

Nice resort for families. Lots of activities for non-skiers or for your off-days. Pleasant staff at all locations. Controlled access (security guard at the gate) an interesting plus, especially if you are staying on-site. Rental of an on-site accommodation gets you discounts on lift tickets and equipment rentals. For extended stays, look into buying an activity card for discounts. Parking convenient, with great drop-off area. Don't be fooled by the lack of snow on the ground. It's not Colorado, but it was great to ski all day and not be cold or wet (we usually ski in below-zero temps in the Midwest). Well-maintained. Crowds were light for the winter break week. There is an activity card available that may be worth the money if you are staying for a full week or coming back in the same season. We are intermediate skiers and will be going back, especially as it is only two hours from home/DC area! Only down side--tubing runs a bit slow (not as fast as those at Wintergreen).
