This is a beautiful hotel, government-run and newly renovated. It's also very affordable, when you consider the exchange rate! Some rooms have views of the Forbidden City, and ours had a nice view of the Hutong (local alleyway residences) behind the hotel. Now that I know that a lot of the hutongs are being demolished to make way for new buildings for the olympics, it makes the view a bit more interesting. I don't know if those little houses are still there or not. Strangly enough, with all of the money that went into the renovation to make it a five-star hotel, the bathrooms are like those in a bad roadside motel! McDonald's

Restaurant | "McDonald's/ Western Toilets!!"

This entry is not so much about the dining as just a helpful thought. McDonald's is all over the place, and it's one of the few places that actually had Western toilets! (Yes, the horror stories about Chinese public toilets are true!) I refused to eat at any U.S. fast-food chains while there, but I did take advantage of the restrooms on more than one outing! I was amazed at how many Western franchises were there. McD's and KFC seemed to be everywhere. There was even a Starbucks 2 blocks from our hotel!

Unfortunately, be very careful about the jewelry, the "14k gold" jade earings I purchased turned out to be nickle plated, so now I can't wear them. From the jade factory, we went to the ming tombs. We only got to see 1 tomb, but it was truely beautiful. I was amazed to see just how many people leave offerings of money in front of the emperor's statue as a way of buying favors from beyond. The view from the top of the tomb, looking over the compound is great for taking pictures! We were there for about one and a half hours, but I really think...Read More
