New Hampshire: Autumn in New Hampshire

Overview

Quote:
Travelling along the Kancamagus Highway through the White Mountain National Forest. The drive was beautiful, with amazingly different and exciting views every few minutes. There were plenty of rest stops to get out and experience the autumn foliage on foot, and I wished that I had alotted more time to explore this amazing recreational park.

Quick Tips:

Though the prices are increased to take advantage of visitor interest, make sure to come during the relatively few prime weeks in autumn to witness nature's amazing colors.

Best Way To Get Around:

I rented a car for the weekend to travel all over the state of New Hampshire.

Horsefeathers

Restaurant

This very popular restaurant seems to be drawing in both the locals and the tourists. Its ideal location across the street from the train station and just a few blocks away from the outlet stores means that you can't miss it. The food was pretty good, similar in style and presentation to what you might order at TGIFriday's but of higher quality.

The homemade soup I sampled was pretty good, and the lemon bar mousse dessert was yummy. Getting seated took a while and flagging down a waitress to order food took even longer. But the food eventually brought to my table convinced me that I'd want to visit Horsefeathers again if I was in North Conway.

Kancamagus Highway

When I was younger I grew frustrated with my grandparents, who'd like to take me for rides in the car. I didn't appreciate the concept of driving around for fun with no particular destination in mind. Now that I'm older, I have some insight on the joys to be had in relaxing and watching the world go by, and I can't imagine a better drive to take the Kancamagus Highway during autumn. The colors exploding on the side of the road were thrilling, even after I had driven by countless other displays of falling leaves throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. But there was more to view than the changing colors, as every few minutes an amazing mountain vista, looking out for as far as the eye can see, ...Read More

White Mountain National Forest

The White Mountain National Forest is a rather large section of forest that can be accessed from a number of entry points. I was travelling along the Kancamagas Scenic Highway when I came across multiple rest stops that were actually trail heads, leading to some unplanned day hikes to break up my afternoon car travels. While the beautiful foliage was fun to witness up close and on foot, the unfortunate consequence of hiking as the season change is the unlimited supply of sticky mud all along the hiking paths. I spent most of my time on the Greely Ponds trail, which is closer to the Interstat 93 end of the Kancamagas Highway. One thing I learned later on is that you can buy a sing...Read More

Campbell's Books

This cut-out and remainders bookstore might not seem all that exciting to many people, but if you like travel books (and if you don't, why are you viewing this website?) this place is a great bookstore to check out. I bought a number of guidebooks, some brand new hardback editions, all for under $2 each. I kept thinking that there had to be a mistake, or that they were printings that were at least a few years old. But all the books were under two years old, in near mint condition, and cost next to nothing. There is a wide selection of other non-fiction and fiction titles to peruse, and brand new road atlas guides for $3. Mine was getting pretty beat up from all the back road foliage explorations ...Read More

Dating back to 1872, the Conway to North Conway railroad line is in magnificent shape and provides passengers an opportunity to see much of the same natural beauty that blankets this region. The shorter hour-long ride travels eleven miles to Conway, passing the local fields, streams and rivers, and still standing rustic farms. The 21 mile roundtrip to Bartlett lasts almost two hours, and crosses a number of large rivers while heading northwest of the the station. The train station is remarkably well preserved and fun for a city boy like me to poke around in. It's like stepping back in time and experiencing another world, which in many ways describes my experiences throughout New Hamp...Read More
