I lived in Sicily

A June 2004 trip to Taormina by judicool

In the famous Sicilian town of Taormina, where hotels are no surprise, there is this one amazing hilltop location that has a view to Etna Mountain. It is owned by Simple Minds leader Jim Kerr. It is a friendly, beautifully designed spot. It is also glamorous but has the typical Sicilian-family atmosphere. I'll go back.

Sicily can be easily considered as a tourist trap. If you find yourself for example in the middle of lovely town of Taormina you'll be surrouded by restaurants with menus created especially for you - naive and willing to pay a lot visitor. So the best you can do is to rent a car and go to the most remote villages somewhere in the mountains and there you'll feel as if the time had stopped and you're in the middle of the Godfather scenery. But do not worry - it is safe wherever you go. Few places especially in Taormina are so classic that it would be a sin to miss them..

Quick Tips:

Rent a car.
Find remote places, restaurants.
Ask locals where to eat.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking is the best way to get around. To get to the beach, take a funivia, or funicular.

Be careful when renting a car. Parking in Taormina is a horror. If renting a car, choose a Smart car. It’s cheap and small enough to fit into a parking spot.

Hotel

This hotel is simple, for all simpleminded fun and simpleminded souls. It has very nice interiors, great food, and a swimming pool with an amazing view!! We met Jim Kerr at the pool, he was such a normal, relaxed guy. The hotel is owned by him and a Sicilian family named Chemi. They all make an amazing atmosphere, trying to make your stay as good as possible. There's a wireless Internet connection and special prices when making a reservation through Internet. It's a bit far from the center, but they will drive you to town!!!

This is definitely the best bar in Taormina. It is open till 2 or 3am, and it is always crowded. It has the best drinks, amazingly beautiful people, and owners who are so sweet. Sometimes overcrowded but undoubtedly worth seeing if you want to meet the right people in Taormina. Try their caipirinia!!

Being in Taormina, you simply cannot avoid shopping. You'll find almost anything on the main street, Corso Umberto, including the best clothes in Parisi stores and lots of small shops with Sicilian ceramics. Some stores open till late. Have a break in one of the bars for an Italian aperitivo around 7pm. That's a must.

This is one of the most glamorous lidos in Italy, hot during the high season, and in the afternoon, you can sip your drink and have the best parties in the evening. It's all chic and exotic, and the design is directly from outstanding Milan designer stores. Last year, they had sushi--that is uncommon in Sicily!
