Grand Case in St. Martin

A July 2004 trip to St. Maarten/St. Martin by ptkochanny

Grand Case is the dining capital of the Caribbean. Fresh products arrive daily from France. Don't let people say that it is a very expensive island. We drank excellent wines for $5 a bottle and ate fresh seafood for $10 a meal.

We stayed at the Grand Case Beach Club and found the facilities to be wonderful. There were two beaches, a nice pool, and one of the best spots to view the sunset each evening. The Saturday Market in Marigot is fun to see.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

The island is small enough to rent a car to get around. Driving is relatively easy. The Dutch side was much busier. Marigot can be hectic at times (follow the water to avoid going through the middle of town).
What a beautiful place. There are two beaches to choose from. The pool is small but not very crowded. Water sports are available right on the property. There are locked gates that provide security(although we never worried). This place was very quiet when we were there (July). The room rate was around $125, and it included a bottle of wine at check-in. The staff was friendly and accommodating. It is a short walk into town to some of the best restaurants in the Caribbean. You don't have to worry about parking. There are also lighted tennis courts if that's your thing. You may use the computer in the lobby for Internet service. I have some terrific photos, but they are larger than 200K, and I can't put them on this site. They are 1.4 GB. I can send them via email if you would like.

Story/Tip

When going to St.Maarten/St.Martin, it is best to rent a car before you get there. We booked a vehicle through Orbitz and paid $18 each day. When we returned from our sailing vacation, we rented a car by "walking up," and it was $43 for the day. Driving is very easy on the island. Keep your speeds down, and you'll be fine. Look for partially hidden road signs and those darn "rumble strips." Having a car is the best way to get to some of the less populated beaches.
