A December 2004 trip
to Puerto Plata by DeeJA495
Quote: This journal will assist you in planning for your vacation trip to Puerto Plata in the DR. We were there for 2 weeks, and have plenty to say.
Hotel | "The Coconut Palms Resort"
They have their own private beach (small but adequate) and a little golf cart-like vehicle to take you to the beach and back. They offer tours from the hotel - do not take the Blue Lagoon Tour unless your guide (the taxi driver) speaks English and knows of the spots he is to be taking you to. The casinos are small and mostly filled with locals. Souvenir shopping is best at the Plaza Dorado, a complex of about 15 hotels.
Downtown is impossible to navigate and hardly anyone speaks English. We found out that it is better to hire a taxi driver who speaks English and pay him $60 for the day. He will drive you to all the scenic spots: Isabel de Torres, the cable car up the mountain, The Amber Museum, the fort, and the flea market. They are all in Puerto Plata.
Our favorite restaurants close to the hotel are Paradise and La Camarone in Cabarette - one is in front of the other as you drive into town. If you eat on the side of the street by the water, the prices are two and three times the dollar amount. In Sosua we liked PJ's Restaurant. We got lost in Sosua and found lot of small out-of-the-way roadside restaurants and hotels.
Also, when we booked the trip, we didn't realize that Puerto Plata is still on the Atlantic Ocean. On the other side of the island by Punta Cana, you are by the Caribbean Sea. It takes about 6 hours to drive from one side of the island to the other, so you couldn't take a day trip. Gas was $3/gallon, but we only used one tank for the 2 weeks.
The hotel has a computer for the visitors to use. The food in their restaurant was very good, and all the hotels in the DR usually have nightly entertainment - Coconut Palms was no different. I would not visit our hotel in the summer months, as they have no air-conditioning in the rooms, only ceiling fans. We were fine in December, but the summer months would be brutally hot. The maids are good. The room was very clean, and our two-bedroom suite was well-equipped and large.
