Cozumel SCUBA

Overview

Quote:
A tour to Chichen Itza on the mainland is a must for the history buff. I arranged the tour through an agency right in San Miguel and flew over there.

Quick Tips:

English spoken by many but a pocket Spanish dictionary came in very handy.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking around San Miguel is the best way to see the area. A day rental of a moped is more than adequate to see the other side of the island and some other ancient ruins like San Cervais (sp?).

This is a no frills place but clean and no worry of crime. It caters to divers, so equipment going in and out of the hotel doesn''t raise eyebrows. A nice patio on the waterside is good place to drink a beer while watching divers prepare for shore entries. Paradise Dive has a shop on site. It''s good to know a little Spanish since the staff is not good with English.

Ernesto's is a small cafe next to Planet Hollywood on the waterfront road in town. This is a great people watching spot, but with only 3 or 4 tables near the road you need to time your visit. Otherwise you will be further back from the road and miss out on a terrific view of sunset.

This is a free form, non-guided tour, but I did see where others had arranged a guide. The Mayan ruins are certainly not as impressive as Chichen Itza but are so damn close to town (by taxi or moped) that it would be a shame to miss out. The site is located off the road that bisects the island and covers at least 20 acres or more. It's spread out but has lots of early architechure in the forms of houses and altars. Lots of large iguanas sun themselves on the rocks during daylight hours.

Most dive sites are within minutes of the dock. Palancar reef has a number of divesites with caverns which are Kodak moments. Visability good but I didn't see the variety of fish I had hoped.
