Depending on where you live and where you vacation, the landscape of Sedona can be as familiar as your commode or as alien as your mother-in-law's meatloaf. I was in Phoenix on a business trip in the spring of 2004, and as a side trip, my collegues and I traveled the 1.5 hours north to visit this supposed red rock heaven. Being from Washington DC, I am not used to seeing the expanses of barren landscape that accompany the trip from Phoenix to Sedona. About 10 minutes after exiting Interstate 17N, I started seeing monstrous red mountains appearing over the horizon. The closer you get to Sedona, the more amazing the landscape becomes.
