As an ex-pat who has lived in Melaka, Malaysia for 25 years, owning a rock’n’roll bar and grill, I think I have an endless amount of help and advice for the first- or second-time traveller!

First, I love Melaka. I plan to be here the rest of my life. I complain everyday about something, but I love it here.

As a traveler, do not try to compare this place to where you come from or even the rest of Malaysia! People have a "special way" about them that is unique to the country.

Spending (their) money is a big issue with these people. Taking yours is the opposite. Always bargain and say it's too expensive, as they do everyday. Don’t always believe what you hear; get several opinions or shop around. My future writings shall all be positive for Melaka I hope!

Quick Tips:

They mostly compete by who has the cheapest food, not the best. Cheap will mean lots of bones, watery sauces, low-grade curries, cheap broken rice, and low-quality foods in general. There are very fine places to eat and enjoy here also!

Best Way To Get Around:

Taxis are a major rip-off! I avoid them as much as possible. Some have meters, but they say that their meter is broken. Town buses are cheap and go all over, but they are dirty and stop running at 10pm. Renting a bike is a good way to go, but be careful! Trishaws can have outrageous prices; check a few first before deciding on one. Walking from Red Square Central will get you to the nightlife and food. Many pubs, restaurants, and hotels/guesthouses are in the Jonkers Street area and in Taman Melaka Raya nearby.

Rock & Roll Front
Best quality western food in Malacca. Large portions, all NZ beef, big burgers, steaks, US roast turkey, and NZ leg of lamb. Very large menu. Blues and rock-and-roll on the stereo, live jam sessions by "The Boneshakers" now and then. Family friendly, cosy, with a large regular expat crowd. CLEAN TOILETS!
