Getaway to Hermann

A December 2004 trip to Hermann by Globe

Quote: Hermann is situated between St. Louis and Columbia, Missouri, and it is a perfect stopping point for a day or weekend. The small town kept us entertained for two mid-week days in the winter, and it promises to be even better in the summer or on a festival weekend.

The Vinchester Inn has a superb location, near the historic landmarks, restaurants, and museums. More reasonably priced than many of the bed-and-breakfasts, the Vinchester provides double rooms for $50. Our room was basic, yet complete - two double beds, a clean bathroom, a TV with many channels, and a microwave and small refrigerator. Off-street parking is available in a lot behind the motel. Breakfast is included, but consists of only canned juice and packaged pastries. Non-smoking rooms are available, but the lobby area is very smoky due to a receptionist's apparent affinity for cigarettes. If you are after charm and luxury, you may be better off in one of the myriad bed-and-breakfasts. If you ...Read More

El Ranchito Mexican Restaurant

Restaurant | "El Ranchito"

Quote:
El Ranchito is a typical tasty Mexican restaurant located just outside of downtown Hermann. The menu offers a range of Mexican food, and the complimentary chips and salsa were delicious. Service is friendly and efficient. A number of lunch specials are available for less than $5. The waiter said that the restaurant's specialty is the fajitas, and indeed they were very good. Hermann offers a variety of German cuisine, but if you are looking for a little more spice, El Ranchito is a great choice.

Concert Hall & Barrel Bar

Restaurant | "Concert Hall & Barrel Bar"

Quote:
While Hermann seems to be quite touristy, the Concert Hall & Barrel Bar seemed to be a place where you could meet the town's residents. The bar serves a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, and pizza. Food prices are very reasonable, and you could easily get a meal and a drink for less than $10. A wide variety of beers are available on tap and in bottles, and the local wines can be sampled. Large screen TVs are on the walls to show the night's sports events.

Hermannhof Vineyards

Attraction | "Hermannhof Winery"

Quote:
The Hermannhof Winery is located in downtown and is easily accessible on foot or by car. You enter into the tasting area and gift shop. The friendly staff member poured us several of the winery's products and answered all our questions about each wine, the winemaking process, and the winery itself. Wine-tasting is free of charge, though bottles are available for sale. The gift shop offers many wine-related gifts, such as bottle stoppers, wine racks, and openers. As I visited in December, a huge number of ornaments were on display and were also available for purchase. The second room of the winery has sausage and cheese available for tasting. They also sell freshly baked French bread and cookies. Co...Read More

Stone Hill Winery

Attraction

Quote:
The Stone Hill Winery has a beautiful setting, overlooking Hermann and the Missouri River in the distance. Stone Hill has an expansive gift shop, tasting room, and operating cellars. For $1.50, you can take an informative tour that lasts about 30 minutes. While walking through the winery's building, the guide gave us a brief history of the winery and explained the impact of Prohibition. The winery is thriving once again and making excellent wines! The tour ends in the tasting room, where a well-informed gentleman poured us about 10 different wines and surely would have kept going if we had asked. He suggested wines to match our preferences and was pleasant and informative. The winery also has a res...Read More
