Quote: We found a fantastic "home" in the City of London, the original Square Mile, where Roman soldiers, Charles Dickens, Samuel Pepys, and Jack the Ripper walked. Being the most ancient part of London, it was fascinating and full of history.

We chose to stay in a neighborhood that is off the beaten path, the Smithfield/Clerkenwell area, just northwest of St. Paul's Cathedral. This is one of the oldest areas of London, a result of surviving the fire of 1666 that destroyed most of the old city. Our "home" was on Cloth Fair, so named because of the annual fair held in the area from 1133 to 1855, when Victorian sensibilities were offended by the revelry and the fair was closed. The Hand and Shears Pub on Cloth Fair stands on the location of the original pub from which the Lord Mayor of London opened the fair each year. The pub also served as the location for the court of the fair. If a cloth merchant cut his cloth short or otherwise def...Read More

Cloth Fair consists of two lodgings, next door to each other on a quiet, historical street in the most ancient part of London. The Landmark Trust owns the restored properties and rents them out for three-day, four-day, or weekly periods. The area is remarkably rich with history, and is also one of the trendiest areas in town, with great pubs, restaurants, and clubs within literally yards of the front door. In London, where space is so precious, our lodgings were palatial. The front door opens onto a small foyer, with an umbrella stand and coat rack. Up one flight of stairs, we found a lovely, well-equipped kitchen, complete with convection oven, toaster, electric kettle, and small refrigerator. ...Read More

The Express by Holiday Inn -- London City is a pleasant, affordable hotel in the interesting Hoxton area. We were not able to coordinate our flight with our time at our permanent lodging at Cloth Fair and needed one night elsewhere to recover from our jet lag and gather our wits. The Express served our purpose well and was much more pleasant than I had expected for the £79 internet rate. Our room was small but comfortable, cheerfully decorated, and well appointed. We had Internet access, a small TV, tea/coffeemaker in the room, and a wonderful shower with plenty of hot water and thick towels. We arrived 4 hours before the ...Read More

How sad it is to live 5,000 miles from my favorite restaurant! During our week in London, we ate at Carluccios three times and prepared meals from ingredients purchased there several other times. In addition to a large, lively, and always full dining room, Carluccios has a deli and grocery area full of tempting treats to take out. Everything we tried was wonderful, from the delicious risotto, ravioli, and chicken dishes to the sinful desserts. Our first visit was after a long walk on a chilly day, and we dropped in for something warm to drink. We discovered Bicerin, a rich treat that was almost a meal in itself. Our server brought us each a tray with three small jugs--one of espresso, one...Read More

Tea at the Ritz! We just had to do it once, but once was enough. While the Palm Court is a beautiful setting and the service was impeccable, this has become a tourist attraction primarily for Americans, so something has been lost. I made reservations months in advance on the hotel website and arrived on time at 3:30pm to find a long line, although seating was quick. We were sent to check our wraps before we were seated, although I really didn't want to check anything. But it was obvious that one follows the rules here so that everyone can be processed efficiently. The Palm Court is lovely, and we settled into a small table surrounded by one ch...Read More

We slipped into this wine bar one cold evening since it was about 10 feet from our front door. Above the restaurant is one of the Landmark Trust lodgings, where England's poet laureate, John Betjeman, lived for many years. Our server was very helpful and recommended a great South African wine - Springfield Estates Wholeberry Cabernet. I have searched in vain to find it in the US. There were many other interesting selections on the wine menu, and the location is wonderful. Across the street is St. Bartholomew's the Great, the setting for one of the weddings in Four Weddings and a Funeral and for scenes from Shakespeare in Love. The churchyard provides a restful view while ...Read More

Floris

Attraction

Quote:
Nestled among some of the most posh shops in London on exclusive Jermyn Street, Floris has been making London smell good since 1730. Owned by the eighth generation of the Floris family, it is very girly and luxurious. Lavender sachets, scented soaps, potpourri, candles, perfume -- Floris is a wonderland of fragrance. Our salesgirl was very helpful and patient when we had a credit card problem and assisted us in finding some wonderful Christmas gifts. A box of four large lavender sachets, wrapped in ribbon and packed in a lovely box, was £26. A box of six assorted guest soaps was only £10. I like to make little gift bags for my friends, and these items were perfect. Prices aren't cheap,...Read More

Dennis Severs' House

Quote:
I hesitate to classify this experience as a museum. In Mr. Severs' words, it is a "still-life drama" designed to transport visitors into the past through sights, sounds, and smells. The late Mr. Severs lived in this house for several years and gradually created an evocative experience based upon the premise that a family lives in the house and that you are merely a nosy guest observing the family's life. As you roam through the house, you hear footsteps, laughter, and conversations, just down the hall it seems. You feel the presence of the family, although they are seen only through portraits and their belongings lying about. When we visited, the Christmas Installation had been completed. One ro...Read More

St. Bart's Cloth Fair Entrance Photo - The Priory Church of St. Bartholomew the Great, London, England
Quote:
This beautiful church is the oldest public church in London. Only the Chapel of St. John in the Tower of London is more ancient. St. Bart's was established in 1123 by Rahere, King Henry I's jester. Rahere had a vision ordering him to establish a monastery and church, and later, the hospital next door also named St. Bart's. Once covering a much larger area, the monastery's holdings were diminished during Henry VIII's dissolution of Catholic churches. Now an Anglican/Episcopal church, it has remained active for almost 900 years. We attended the Advent Sunday service, and it was a beautiful and inspiring experience. The medieval interior has been used in movies such as Shakespeare in L...Read More

This is the first place to go if you are interested in London history and would like to have some understanding of the things you will see in London during your visit. Right around the corner from our lodgings, we visited the Museum of London on our first day in town. We could easily have spent an entire day there. Although there were a lot of school children, there were very few tourists, and the place was not crowded. It's off the beaten path, and I would guess that most people visiting London aren't familiar with it. But our visit enriched our trip tremendously, and I highly recommend visiting this museum before hitting all the more famous attractions....Read More

My friend and I sat in front of the fire in the Rising Sun a couple of evenings after long chilly walks around the city. The bar staff was friendly and helpful, and prices were very reasonable. I enjoyed the hard apple cider on tap, and my friend liked the beer. Bar snacks and lunch are served from noon to 3pm daily, but no food is available in the evenings. There has been a Rising Sun Pub in this location for at least 150 years. The bar has two rooms downstairs and more space upstairs for private functions and the lunch crowd. There is a quiz night every Tuesday, and if you get hungry during the hours food is not served, go next door to Betjeman's or down the block to Carluccio's for a great me...Read More

This may seem like a strange recommendation, but we visited the local Safeway when we were getting settled into "our" flat and picked up tons of gift items at a reasonable price. The English tea, jams, and other treats that cost so much in the US are just "normal" there, and it was great to find one bargain in London! My favorite find was Ovaltine. I bought four jars because the European version is still the same as it was 40 years ago, while the American formulation has become more and more sugar-laden over time. My friend stocked up on tea and jams. We visited Boots the Chemist for the magical blister plasters available there. A friend had told me about them, and she was right. Our p...Read More
