Our intent was to have a summer holiday at the beach, so we went to Assateague and swam, walked, built sandcastles, flew kites, or just lay on the beach. We also tried fishing, but even though we saw others catch quite big fish, we were pretty unsuccessful. We did, however, catch crabs and clams and cooked them up at home.

Best Way To Get Around:

You'll need a car to get there, but after that, many people cycle to the beach or around town. There is also a bus service around the town. Cycle rental is available from a number of locations. If you want to go boating to explore the area from a different vantage point, there are a number of rental locations.

Assateague beach is on a barrier island that is designated a National Seashore. It is accessible by causeway from nearby Chincoteague Island and is an excellent location for families who like to swim, surf, or fish. In summer, you'll see lots of people swimming, building sandcastles, and flying kites. In the cooler months, the swimming drops off, but there are always people fishing or just walking the beach. There are no houses or shops on the beach, as it is part of the national park, so you will have to bring food and drink with you or wait till you are finished.
