There are so many highlights! Most tourist start their exploration of this medieval city in 'old town', at the center of which is the 'Royal Mile', stretching from Edinburgh Castle, downhill to the Palace of Holyroodehouse ( a current resience of the Royal Family). This is where I return again and again. Both castles are worth a visit but Edinburgh is most impressive a top volcanic rock - Castle Rock. The Royal Mile itslelf is full of great shops (many very touristy), old churches/cathedrals, pubs and other historical bits and bobs. Don't miss the Ghost Tour/Haunted Tour of old town, all tours end at a pub by the way! Shopping along Princes Street in the 'New Town' is popular with many, and the archit...Read More

This is a guided tour of Scottish Whisky making. I was suprosed that the tour included a history of whisky distilleries, historical moments of the whisky industry and its economic impact on Scotland. The tour includes a ride through whisky history and ends with a shot of whisky, followed by a large store with various homegrown whiskies. Highlight: standing in the giant whisky vat!

The many shops along this top portion of the royal Mile provide everything a visitor could want. There are many clothing stores, including Scottish speciality wools. The tourist shops are an attraction in and of themselves. You will find everything from paintings, t-shirts, decorative tea towels, assorted knick-knacks, histpry and locan interest books, heritage items, clotted creams, whiskey, bag pipes, etc. Plus, I've never been to a tourist shop along this area where the shop staff weren't friendly and talkative.

St. Giles' Cathedral Photo, Edinburgh, Scotland

It's actually a relatively small cathedral by comparison, although its Spire stands out in the Old Town. It was Edinburgh's parish church and there has been a church there since well before the 10th century. One of its claims to fame is that John Knox (head of the Scottish reformation) was once a minister here. There are guided tours available but you can also buy a small souvenir guide which will take you through the church. There is a notable chapel within this cathedral which houses beautiful heraldic stained-glass windows. Admission is free but is expected that you'll contribute a small donation. Note: the Mercat Cross is just in front of this Cathedral.

Ghost Hunters walk

Mercat offers a few tours, although I do not recall any of their names exactly. They all begin/ meet at Mercat Cross in front of St Giles. Tours last approx. 1 1/2 - 2 hours and end at a pub, the haunted variety. Tour guides are students at the University who major in History, therefore, they are real experts on the subject mattter. These ghost tours do more than just look for ghosts or tell ghost stories, they provide a history of the city. You'll hear and see the sights of local folklore, plagues, mass murderers, various mysterious events and the supernatural.

Edinburgh Castle sits a top volcanic rock - Castle Rock, at the top of the Royal Mile. Evidence exists showing that this site was used by prehistoric societies. Edinburgh Castle became a Royal Castle in the 11th Century and is technically owned by the British Royal Family. A guided or self-guided tour leads the visitor through a turbulent Scottish history, with stories and echoes of the past emerging throughout the various great rooms, stairwells, chapel, vaults, and wards. After Hollyroodhouse was built, the castle became more a site for the military. It has been seiged numerous times and rebuilt even more than that. The last seige this Castle saw was during the final rising of the Scottish p...Read More
