I LOVE Prague. Even in freezing weather, everyone wants to go to Prague! I can't imagine the crowds in the summer. It was a nice, comfortable pace for me, although a bit chilly. It is such a great city with everything in walking distance.

Pension U Medvidku

They have nice, clean, cute, and decent-sized rooms. The staff is friendly. The restaurant/beer hall is also good and convenient. A HUGE breakfast is included, and it has a large variety to keep you full way past lunch.

This pension is in a great location, on the edge of Old Town, but it’s close to New Town. It is also just a block off the river, so it’s very easy to get to one of the city’s many bridges. It is less than a 10-minute walk to the Old Town Square.

It's about a block form a Tesco (where the metro station is located), so if you need something or forgot to pack something, it's easy to pick it up here. Plus, being the near the Tesco, you can buy film and other tourist needs, but at standard prices versus trying to buy film next door to the astronomical clock!

The hotel has "historic" rooms for a 10% higher rate. The basic room I stayed in was very nicely decorated, with furniture I would say has more character than most hotels I have stayed in. At my first quick glance of the room, I asked my friend to make sure we weren't accidentally given an "historic" room. I would guess the historic rooms are pretty nice.

The hotel also provides a computer with free Internet access, which was fabulous.

Walking Tours (City Tours)

You meet at a designated time at the clock and then go on a slow walking tour that takes about 90 minutes. You can pay for the tours on the spot. We got a package of two tours, with a third for free. We went on a tour of Old Town architecture, the Jewish Quarter, and a ghost tour. They were all enjoyable and informative, as well and entertaining. You get to hear some stories and information you may not get out of a guidebook. The tours are all a very reasonable distance and length, and all move at a very leisurely pace.

There are many companies that offer the tours, each toting a different color umbrella. I was with Prague City Tours, but I am sure the others are good, as well. I just highly recommend doing a walking tour, as they are cheap and a great way to learn about Prague.

Astronomical Clock

The Astronomical Clock is a hard sight to miss. It figures prominently in the Old Town Square and goes into action every hour, on the hour. Most tour books and walking guides explain what the clock and its characters represent. Also, you can walk up the clock tower to an outdoor deck. You can get some really fabulous panoramic views of Prague. Yes, there are a lot of stairs, but there is also an elevator if you prefer to save your energy for all the other sights there are to see in the city!

Josefov--Jewish Quarter

The Jewish Quarter in Prague is not to be missed. You can pay for the individual sites or for a full ticket that costs 500 crowns ($21.37), if I remember correctly. It gets you entry into the major synagogues, as well as the museum and cemetery. It's well worth it to see the quarter. It’s a tiny area that speaks a million words when you realize how many people were crammed into this living area. The overcrowded cemetery says it all. I recommend a good guide book or walking tour of this area to learn the stories and some of the historic truths and local legends of the area--check out Gallum and the Rabbi Levi.
