When you head out of Fort Worth to the west, you soon realize that you are on rising land. In 30 minutes you come to Weatherford, a wonderful Texas town. Almost all directions are given relative to the location of the Courthouse. Find it and you have a sure way of finding your way around. Not to 'citified' as yet, Weatherford still has a small town feel.

Mesquite Tree
Even though it is close to the Fort Worth-Dallas Metroplex, Weatherford maintains its atmosphere as a small town. No traffic, except on First Monday Trade Days. It's a very nice place to live or visit. I never have found a great place to eat in Weatherford. Nothing to recommend as yet.

Quick Tips:

In early Texas, Weatherford the the last town people going by wagon train would visit as they set out further west. A special place to visit is the county Courthouse--you can't miss it.

Best Way To Get Around:

Oh come now, you're really in Texas when you are in Weatherford. You either drive a pickup or ride a horse. If you can't do one or the other....

Weatherford is cattle country
This is a small Best Western, nice, moderately priced and a handy location. You don''t have much choice in Weatherford. You can stay on the western fringes of Fort Worth and have a choice of moderately prices motels and suites places. If you really want to stay in Weatherford, this motel is handy to Weatherford Community College and the hospital. I always find it hard to find a wonderful breakfast in Weatherford, but as the town grows, choices will expand.

Do you want to buy a mule? Do you like to hunt for antiques? Do you like to wander the outdoor aisles to see what there is to see? This is the place for you. Much fun, food and general stuff on sale. Especially good prior to the Christmas holiday for gift buying.

Created and built by artist Douglas G. Chandor. The gardens are both in Chinese and English style. Many water features including a 40 foot waterfall, grottos and fountains. Usually closed in August due to extreme heat. Telephone for information. Chandor Gardens is changing hands and may well be owned and run by the city of Weatherford by the time you read this. Telephone ahead for hours and days open. Open Mid-March through Mid-November. Chandor Gardens.

Parker County Courthouse
Every Texas county courthouse is unique. A considerable job of architecture! Made of Texas limestone, this large building is a great photo opportunity. Dark and cool inside. It surely stands out on the prairie. This building was dedicated in 1886. Parking is easy, take the time to see this building. Be careful of the traffic as this Courthouse sits in the middle of major roads.

Santa Fe Railroad
Built in 1909, this was the first all-brick structure in this area to have a concrete floor. A considerable improvement over wood. Easier to keep clean! Three blocks east of Courthouse. Open Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm. Now houses the Chamber of Commerce. Free information available.

A double headed windmill
Known as the 'Dean of Texas' trail drivers. Oliver Loving is a hero of Texas history. He arrived in Parker County about 1855. Wounded by Indians during a trail drive with Charles Goodnight, he died at Fort Sumner in 1867. It is interesting to wander around Greenwood Cemetery as many Texas pioneers are buried there. Be careful of fire ants!

West Texas Porch
It is fun to drive around Weatherford to see the old houses. Dating back to Victorian times, many of the best are now bed and breakfast places. I have only seen these from the outside. Christmas season brings lovely holiday lighting both on the houses and down at the Parker County Courthouse.

Antique ShoppingBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

I didn't realize how big antique shopping is in the Weatherford until a man how was repairing some brick work on my house told me that he was quitting brick work to keep his antique shop in Weatherford open more days of the week. You will start to see antique stores as you drive Highway 80 into town toward the Parker County Courthouse.

Most of the shops are 'you buy 'em, you tote 'em', but sometimes delivery can be arranged. As most Texas families have at least one vehicle that's suitable for toting, this usually isn't a problem.

Horse trading is a couple hundred year old tradition in Weatherford, so be prepared to bargain. Some of the shops have brand new merchandise also. Have fun!
