Lake Placid is a winter wonderland of fun. After hosting the 1980 Winter Olympic Games the town opened most of the sporting facilities to the public. The result: A total winter sporting expeience.

After a day on the slopes wander into town and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate. Then explore all the cute shops lining the streets. There's a discount GAP that has amazing deals!

Quick Tips:

The wind chill in Lake Placid can be brutal so pack plenty of layers. A 30 degree day can actuall feel like ten below.

Best Way To Get Around:

You'll definitely need a car, and one with a good heater!
Whiteface offers 65 trails that vary in difficulty. They have amazing snow making capabilities and just installed a new gondola that is the fastest in North America. Skiing here is always a fun challenge but the mountain can get very icy from to the high winds. Pick another sport on windy day. There's no amount of clothing that will keep you warm from the wind chill at the peaks.

This is a small museum that covers both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games. It has several exhibits that include athletes' uniforms and equipment along with video highlights and a history of the area. It's not the most amazing thing in town but if the weather's bad and you have nothing else to do swing by. Admission is only $3.00. Contact them at 518-523-1655

Bobsled Rides

Activity

This is an exhilirating sport and I was psyched I got to try it! Your ride begins at the half way point of the actual track. There you squeeze into the small metal bullet with a professional 'driver' and get hurled down the run. It's very fast, very jerky and very loud. After my initial panic died down I really enjoyed this. I can only imagine what it would be like from the top! Too bad they don't let novices attempt it. The cost is about $30 per person but well worth it for the bragging rights alone. It's not something you can do in very many places so make the most of it while you're here!
