Red Top Mountain State Park and LodgeBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Cabins at Red Top Moutain State Park"

These cabins are a great way to either spend a nice, romantic weekend, or to take the family to "the great outdoors" without roughing it too much.

The cabins are nice, because there are no phones or TVs. They have everything else you need, though. The cabins come with stoves, refrigerators, kitchens, dining utensils, bed linens, blankets, and towels. So you don't really need to worry about packing much more than clothes, dish soap, and paper towels. There is heat and air-conditioning, and some cabins have fireplaces. You aren't, however, allowed to bring the family pet.

I went here when I was younger and loved every minute of it. I didn't want to leave. I felt like a 13-year-old Davey Crockett! It really is a great spot to bring the family. There is a minimum stay of two nights and longer stays on holiday weekends. You almost always have to make a reservation.

Buckhead seems to be as much of a party district as it is a major business hub, and the Grand Hyatt Atlanta is the place to enjoy it all. Business persons staying here for any length of time will feel comfortable in any room. The standard king is the perfect choice for those staying for a few days or more for work-related travel. The rooms are nicely divided up, with a large bathroom area almost equal to the size of the actual living area. The living room offers you the elegance to work like a pure playboy. Slip into your complimentary plush, large robe, grab a drink from the in-room minibar, and plug your computer into the dataport line while you conduct business over the speaker phone. If you need a few extra tools to finish your work, the hotel also offers fax machines, copiers, and cell phones for an extra charge.

The Hyatt Regency Suites Atlanta has one of the best deals for the business traveler. As with most Hyatt hotels, they offer an awesome business plan. The business plan includes rooms and services dedicated to the business person. The business-plan rooms offer work centers that not only provide a tidy place to work, but also a 4-in-1 machine that offers printing, faxing, scanning, and copying. Of course, there is also a dataport in the room for Internet hook-up. Computer not working? No problem. This business-friendly hotel also sports a business center with Internet accessible PCs, copier, fax, printer, and even some odds and ends you may need like pens, papers, stapler, etc. To keep you up and running and on top of things, the Business Plan also includes a free daily newspaper and complimentary breakfast in the on-site restaurant.

Quinta Inn & Suites Atlanta AlpharettaBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "La Quinta Atlanta Alpharetta Inn and Suites"

A cheap alternative to this otherwise expensive area is the La Quinta Inn. The hotel has the basics you need to get by, such as data ports, a fitness center, and voicemail in all the rooms. The hotel is clean and the staff is nice. This is just an all-around good deal for the area of the hotel.

There isn’t much around in the way off attractions, but there is some good food. Joe’s Crab Shack is far away, but if you like seafood and a fun atmosphere, check it out. The staff will be more than happy to point you in the right direction. There is also great shopping around town if you are interested in that. The rooms have web TV or high-speed Internet access as well as dial up.

The Stone Mountain Inn is a great way to get in the mood for the Deep South. The hotel looks like a giant old brick mansion. The wrap around porch has beautiful towering white columns.

The hotel is within walking distance to Stone Mountain Park. The park used to be nothing more than a big rock and some laser light shows. But in the past few years, they have totally redone the park, and now, it’s like a historic amusement park. It really is fun for all ages. There are things especially for young kids, older kids, and adults. The most popular thing is a picnic on the lawn in front of the mountain for the laser light show.

The hotel rooms are nothing special. They are typical hotel rooms, but at least they are clean and the staff is nice.

SpringHill Suites Atlanta / Six FlagsBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Spring Hill Suites by Marriott Six Flags"

Springhill Suites is a great place for families in town visiting Six Flags. It doesn't offer any of the perks that the amusement park hotels in Florida do, but at least it's close. It’s about a 5-minute drive to the park. It’s too bad they don't offer a shuttle service, because parking is expensive. It’s $12 to park close to the gate and $6 for parking elsewhere. Parking is free at the hotel, though - too bad you can’t walk.

There is a free breakfast at the hotel you can take advantage of before you and the kids make it to the park. Rooms have separate living and dining areas. They also have fridge, microwaves, and a wet bar. They also have free wireless Internet access, so you can take care of business while on vacation.

Crowne Plaza is right in the heart of Buckhead. Buckhead is what makes Atlanta Hotlanta. Upscale parties, shopping, and dining are all within minutes of this hotel. You can take the free shuttle bus to the surrounding areas if you wish. The hotel is also only a 15-minute drive from the airport if traffic isn’t bad, and it can get pretty bad in Buckhead, especially on the weekends.

The soft cream color rooms invite you to sleep as soon as you walk in the door. My favorite thing about this hotel is that the bathroom has a bathtub! And if you’re on the executive floor, you even get a robe. Usually, you only get that in expensive suites. The rooms have desks, high-speed Internet, and a free morning newspaper. What I don’t like is that you don’t get any free food or drinks unless you stay in the more expensive suites and floors.

Towneplace Suites in Kennesaw is a great place for the family traveling up interstate 75 to stop for the night. While the suites are designed with longer-stay travelers in mind, it is perfect for the family on the go. The hotel is right off the exit and easy to find. The suites come with everything a family could need. There is a fully stocked kitchen, a microwave, and a dishwasher. For those of you traveling with the family pet, pets are also allowed here.

The hotel is close to gas stations and tons of great restaurants. The exit is a popular spot on the weekends, though, so you will have some traffic getting to your hotel, especially since it’s right next to the mall. I recommend eating at the Ippilitios Italian restaurant. Just ask the front desk where it is. It’s about a 5-minute drive from the hotel.

Hotel | "Residence Inn by Marriott Atlanta Town Center"

Couples traveling together will find that the Residence Inn is a great place to make a small pit stop and see the sites in Kennesaw, Georgia. You can get a two-room suite with two separate bedrooms and two separate bathrooms. Both have queen-size beds, and there is a living room and dining room. There is free wireless Internet access for you to keep up with friends while you are on the road.

There are a few good sports bars around the hotel. My favorite in Taco Mac. Another good one is Sidelines, where you can play pool, darts, and sing. These are all very popular bars in the area, so just ask the front desk and they will point you in the right direction.

The Wyndham Vinings is right in the heart of Vinings. Vinings is way too hip, trendy, and expensive for me. But if that’s your thing, then this is the place for you.

One thing about Vinings, though, is that it has some great restaurants. I like the Old Vinings Inn myself. They have been known to be pretty bad with their reservation system, so you might want to call and check and double-check your reservation a few times to make sure things go smoothly. The staff is usually nice about fixing their mistakes, though. If it really is their fault, they will do whatever they can to make sure you are happy, even if it means putting you in a more expensive area.

W Atlanta - MidtownBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Sheraton Midtown Atlanta at Colony Square"

The Sheraton Atlanta Hotel is how all Atlanta hotels should be. It’s elegant and modern. The dark, rich colors of the room are warm and inviting. The wood furniture is the perfect finishing touch. The wood desk with a lamp, a telephone, and a computer data port is a great spot to get work done. If you forgot something you might need to get the work done, just check out the on-site business center, which may have what you’re looking for.

The hotel also offers luggage storage. Most people don't know about this service. Are you doing some traveling within your traveling? Why bring things you don't need when going to visit other spots? The hotel has a storage room where you can leave your luggage safely when you go out on a weekend trip from the hotel.

Hotel | "W Atlanta"

So what does the W stand for in the W Atlanta? Wow and woof. Wow is for the simply amazing rooms. They are just comfortable, very trendy looking, and oversized. My favorite thing, though, is the way they treat pets, a luxury hotel with luxury service for your pet. When you check in, they give you a pet toy, pet treats, clean-up bags, and W pet tags. In the room you will find a special pet bed, food and water bowls, in-room dog signs, and a dog treat at turndown. The front desk can arrange vet service, grooming, dog sitting, and dog walking. And in case you forgot some of the basics, the front desk also has leashes, toys, treats, and puppy pads for your special pet.

Hotel | "Embassy Suites Hotel Atlanta at Centennial Olympic"

The Embassy Suites have always been my favorite hotel chain. I must admit that I look forward to playing the Playstation 2 every time I stay at one of these hotels. It’s the little things, you know?

The full-sized free breakfast is a great way to start the day after you spent the whole night playing video games instead of doing work. If you do feel like doing work, there is a nice desk and computer access in the rooms. There is also a business center that is free to use. The rooms are divided into two sections so you don't feel cramped in all day working. The rooms have two phone lines, two phones, voicemail, and computer data ports. There is also a valet laundry service on site.

Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel and SuitesBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Howard Johnson Plaza Suites Hotel"

Business travelers, or any traveler for that matter, might want to shy away from the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel and Suites. While they may have a decent reputation for nice affordable lodging, this one does not. The hotel is located right at the entrance of Underground Atlanta. This used to be a city hot spot. Now it’s just a nasty place were people in Atlanta don't even go, unless you need some drugs of course. This should be the first dead giveaway not to bother with this hotel. Business people in a hurry will get fed up with this hotels lack of service in a hurry. The elevators are slow, the valet parking even slower, and the managers don't seem to care about your complaints. Valet parking is $15 a day, and for that price, you don't even get your car on time.

Ritz - Carlton Hotels: Downtown AtlantaBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "The Ritz-Carlton Atlanta"

Talk about business luxury. The Ritz Carlton Atlanta may no have desks and chairs, but they sure cover their bases with everything else they offer. In town for a big banquet and ripped your tux and lost the cufflinks? No problem, the on-site seamstress will take care of you, as well as throw in some new cufflinks compliments of the Ritz. They also offer technology butlers that can help you with your computer needs during your stay at the hotel. It’s like a room service for those who need some, well, technology! A few extras the business person may like are the free overnight shoeshine and the free daily newspaper. There is also high-speed Internet access, as well as two phone lines with conference-calling features. The hotel also can help arrange limo services, so you can get around in style in your newly sewed-up tux!

Holiday Inn Conference Center DecaturBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Holiday Inn Select Atlanta-Decatur"

If you are in town for a meeting at the congress center or to see a game at the Georgia Dome and you want a nice budget hotel, then try the Holiday Inn Select. While the hotel does offer budget prices in a high-end part of town, they don't offer much in the way of services for the business traveler. About the only thing you can do in your room is hook up your computer to your room phone line for dial-up access. If you want to send a fax, you can ask the front desk and they will fax it for you, for a small fee, of course. There are all the basic amenities of any affordable hotel, such as safes, air-conditioning, and wake-up calls. They do offer executive suites that have upgraded amenities but still nothing that helpful to the business traveler.

Residence Inn Atlanta Airport NorthBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Residence Inn Atlanta Airport"

For those business travelers that need a home away from home because they will in town on business for an extended period of time, the Residence Inn Atlanta may be worth checking out. At the same price as most high-end hotel rooms in the Atlanta area, these hotel rooms are almost twice as big with all the comforts of home. There is a living room area with fireplace, a full kitchen with table, a large bathroom, and sleeping area. These large rooms come with a draw back to the business person though. All the must-haves, such as high-speed Internet, faxing, and the like are all available, but at a charge. Need firewood for that nice fireplace? That will cost you extra, too. There is a hospitality hour in the early evening, where you can get some free drinks and snacks. Other than that, you have to pay for just about everything extra you may need.

Atlanta Airport MarriottBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Marriott Atlanta Airport"

Marriott Atlanta Airport is a great place for the business person who may only be in town for the night or just waiting to catch a flight the next morning. The hotel is only a few minutes from Hartsfield International Airport, and the hotel also offers a 24-hour airport shuttle. So, no matter what time your flight gets in, you have a free ride to your hotel. The rooms are standard and have a few features business travelers may need, such as a large desk and a business center. They also have a special program where the business person can get high-speed Internet access and unlimited local and long-distance calls within the United States. This is, of course, for a small daily fee but is a nice treat if you’re stuck in Atlanta from delayed flights and are trying to arrange new travel options.

Hotel | "Holiday Inn Select"

The Holiday Inn Select is one of the better airport hotels for the business traveler to spend a few days between flights in Atlanta. The hotel is minutes from the airport and offers a free airport shuttle to and from the airport. The rooms here have the business person in mind, with two phone lines with Caller ID, a computer data port, a spacious desk, and an ergonomic desk chair. If you’re in town for a meeting and need to get up early and don't have time for breakfast or to even pick up a cup of coffee, have no fear. The room sports a coffeemaker and some free coffee and condiments. There is also an iron and ironing board, which is really useful for getting freshly unpacked clothes ready for the big meeting in the morning. The front desk is very helpful in helping you get around and will call cabs or set up a car rental for you.

Hotel | "Hampton Inn and Suites-Atlanta Airport North"

I think the Hampton Inn and Suites Airport Atlanta is my favorite hotel for business travel in the airport area. As with most airport hotels, there is a free airport shuttle. It's only about a mile from the airport, a few minutes from the conference center, and a stone's throw from all the major highways, so you can get where you need to go fast. There's no doubt the rooms were built for the business traveler. You can see this with the two phone lines that boast speakerphone and voice mail, as well as a computer data port. The hotel also has business-center Internet services and other computer needs, like printing and faxing. Just in case you spill your free breakfast from the breakfast ball while making a free local call while reading your free USA Today, there is laundry service on the grounds, so you don't have to go the meeting covered in coffee and crumbs!

Four WayBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "The Four Way"

This place is as classic as they come. It's over 50 years old and looks the part. This place has seen presidents come and go, buildings erected, and racism fall. This being the heart of the South and also the last state to end segregation, it only makes sense that, on the back half of this small order-to-go restaurant, there is a small window that used to be used for blacks only. Now, of course, this is out of commission, but it's still eerily strange to see.

The Four Way has some of the fastest, greasiest, and tastiest hand-cooked food in Cartersville. At lunchtime, there are lines out the door, mainly because there is only enough room inside for about six people to stand. If you're ever in Cartersville, this is a must-do. This place is a local legend, and people are proud of it.

The food is great. It's all classic Southern food to go. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, sandwiches, etc. Everything's great. It's hard to recommend any one item from the menu. I usually go with the All-American classic cheeseburger. It's big, it's greasy, and it's delicious. If, for some reason, you get lost and can't find The Four Way, just ask. Anyone in town -- even someone new -- can point you in the right direction!

Etowah Indian MoundsBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site"

This place is as boring as they come. Even if you are a history buff, Native American, or just excited by boring things, this site is sure to put you to sleep. The whole site consists of 6 Earthen mounds, museum, and a gift shop. The mounds are nothing more than glorified buriel pits.

If you really want to you can walk up and down the mouds. It sounds exciting I know. The musem is probably as big as your college dorm room and not intresting at all. Seeing as how they have only excavated 9% of the area, they dont have much to show off.

In short there are far better things to do in the city of Cartersville. Do not waste your time or the $2 it cost to get in.

Swayze's VenueBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Swayze's is a trendy little venue popular with emo and scene kids under the age of 20. Those over the age of 20 are probably pedofiles. They don't serve any beer or liquor here, and the bands are all pretty bad unless you like that music, so there would be no reason to go there if you are over 21. The place is more of a hang-out for high school scene kids on Friday and Saturday nights, then a place for adults on other nights.

The owner of the club is Lee Saterfield, from a local band called Treephort. He a good guy. The band used to be a really popular ska band way back in the day, but now, I don't know what you would call 'em. They sell over-priced drinks and candy bars there; there is also no smoking inside, and they are a pain about re-entry.

Grand TheatreBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Historic Grand Theater"

The Grand Theater is hard to miss if you ever drive through the historic downtown district of Cartersville. Everyone in the town can point you in the right direction. On the outside, it has a classic ‘20s look and feel to it, probably because it hasn't changed much since it was built in 1929. The inside of the theater is a little more modern and has evolved with the times. Inside, there are around 200+ seats on two levels. The theater is air-conditioned, and the sound and lighting are great. There two sets of restrooms downstairs in the lobby, as well as a small snack bar during intermission. No food is allowed in the theater.

In the summertime, the theater has two summer camps: one for younger children and one for older children. My sister and I both participated in them two years in a row. Granted, I didn’t take much from it, because I can’t sing or act that well, but I still enjoyed the two-week camps. Even if I did have to play some homosexual-looking character in Jason and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!

Laser Show at Stone MountainBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Laser Show at Stone Mountian"

Once winter passes and the weather starts to warm, Stone Mountain is a great place to spend a night outdoors. Families, groups of friends, or lovers all find this a must-see destination!

If you show up in the evening and just come to see the laser show, you only have to pay for parking, which is $7. The shows last close to two hours and play all kinds of music. There are amazing laser pictures, fireworks, and a flame-cannon shooting firey balls into the night sky. The most famous story in all of the show is, of course, Johnny Cash’s The Devil Went Down To Georgia. As with all other Georgians, this is of course my favorite part of the show, and it has become a staple in the laser show. But then again, how can you not like Cash?!

I usually go here with a bunch of friends. We go out during the day and buy drinks, subs, cups, etc. We pack up the blankets and chairs and make a night of it. We make sure to show up early to get a primo spot, and then we eat and just mess around until the show begins.

GalleryBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "The Gallery"

The Gallery, rightfully named, is a fairly recent addition to downtown Cartersville. Since its first opening in 2002, it has been one of my favorite stores to stop in and visit. Though I am no aficionado of fine art, I always enjoy seeing new works. There certainly is no shortage of them at The Gallery. The building itself is as bright and colorful as the artwork you will find inside. Once inside, you will most likely find Beth, the owner, and maybe her children as well. The artwork here is all vibrant, funky, and colorful. More modern-style pieces than classics. There are all types of mediums, from photography to pottery and anything in between. As with all great pieces of original artwork, there are hefty price tags on most pieces. However, there is no entrance to simply walk in and look around. And you will most certainly not be looked down upon if you aren’t interested in buying. Beth is simply happy to see someone interested in this amazing art. There's no high-pressure, commission-based selling here. Just artists and art lovers !
