A student's perspective of Dunedin

A travel journal to Dunedin by DanaNZ

A fifth of Dunedin's population is students. After living here for three years, I know the best places to get cheap food and things to do that don't cost too much.

You definitely have to visit Baldwin Street, the world's steepest street. The peninsula is gorgeous. The beaches are great in good weather. Any night of the week during the university year, you'll find a pub somewhere packed full of students. The Octagon has great cafes and nightlife.

Quick Tips:

The weather isn't as bad as people say, although it can stay below 10C for weeks at a time in winter.

Best Way To Get Around:

It's not a big city, so most things are within walking distance. There are buses, but don't trust their time tables, as they're usually 10 minutes late. Taxis are cheap, because nothing's that far away. You might need a car if you want to get out to the peninsula and to some of the beaches.

To get there, follow the one-way north, staying in the right lane. Keep going up the road, and you'll eventually get to Baldwin St., the steepest street in the world.

It's a good idea to walk up the whole street, because then you can actually feel how steep the slope really is, and the views from the top are stunning. There's a seat to reat your aching legs at the top, but unfortunately, the drinking fountain doesn't work.

The houses on the street are built up on one side, and it's funny to turn your head so you're looking at them at a parallel with the road. It looks as though the houses are built at a weird angle and about to fall over. It's possible to drive up (it is a road) if you're not able to walk.
