Ladies Week in Cancun Pt. II

An October 2004 trip to Cancun by GoodGirlsFinishLast

Definitely deserving of the Gold Crown designation. A family vacation resort -- quiet, with few to no activities. Small to medium-sized beach area. White sand, blue water. The waves are not rough enough for body surfing/boogie boarding, etc., but are great for swimming, kayaking, or jet skis.

Eating -- 100% Natural, whose cuisine is health store-meets-Mexican cooking.
Plaza Caracol -- shopping for souvenirs; check out the Tequila store, which has great deals, cheaper than duty-free. Good prices on Mexican vanilla (for cooking).

Quick Tips:

Pick up your welcome package from front desk! Great coupons for restaurants and stores.
Bill at 100% Natural includes a 10%-off coupon at the bottom.
The best exchange rates can be found through the ATM! The ATM rate for Canadian dollars is 9.1, where at money exhanges, it's 8.2. Fiesta Americana DOES NOT exchange CANADIAN money (US and EUROS only!).

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking downtown to the Strip.
Bus is 6.5 pesos. Fast and convenient.
Cabs to anywhere on the Strip are approximately to . Haggling will get you . No haggling, and up...
Sleeping
Small family resort. Rooms were really nice. Studio included a mini fridge and a microwave. Reminded me of a Hilton or Hyatt room. Maid service was great!

Little to no hotel activities -- no nightly entertainment staff, no live band, no bar/lounge. The only included activity was the welcome party. You can purchase tickets for Mexican Party (Tuesdays at the resort) for $40 per person; it includes the Folkoric ballet, a buffet dinner, contests, an open bar, a Mariachi band, and a "break the pinata" game. You can also do a booze cruise to Isla Mujeres (food included).

The beach was great, with lots of chairs. It's also used by people staying at Rio Palace, next door. The water was blue and shallow. The waves were not rough enough for body surfing/boogie boarding, but great for swimming, kayaking, or jet skis. It's a fifteen-minute walk to clubs/bars. Across the street from the mall is the Plaza Caracol. The local Mexican restaurants across the street are pretty bad -- I recommend 100% Natural or somewhere down the "party strip": Carlos & Charlie's, Rainforest, KFC etc...

Breakfast at the hotel (a buffet) was great! Very tasty.

HOTEL DOES NOT EXCHANGE CANADIAN DOLLARS -- US and EUROS ONLY.

Restaurant

Super-heathly Mexican eats. No red meat on the menu, but they did have items with chicken, fish, and pork. Mostly vegetarian. I had grilled cactus salad -- delicious.

Open for breakfast (separate menu), lunch, and dinner. Shakes are a must-have on the menu. There's also a variety of blended fruit juices, vegetable juices, and milk. Soy milk rightly recommended vs. cows milk. Shakes are 25-28 pesos ($2-3). Healthiest pancakes I've ever had -- they tasted like bran muffins and were fantastic. Breakfast is approximately 60-80 pesos ($6-8) per person. Lunch and dinner is approximately 80-130 pesos ($8-13).

Located right across the street from Fiesta Americana. Approximately 15 minutes' walking distance north of the party strip with Coco Bongos, towards Plaza Caracol.

Note: Bill includes a 10%-off coupon at the bottom.
