We left our hearts in San Francisco

An October 2004 trip to San Francisco by Ira Kincaid

San Francisco has it all. Don't miss Fisherman's Wharf, Grace Cathedral, Chinatown, wine country, or Yosemite, and take the city tour.

We suggest that you take a city tour on your first day. We highly recommend Tower Tours. They are the most professional and really treat you well. On the city tour, you will be able to see places you may want to return to on another day. Do not miss the Golden Gate Bridge, but do it on a sunny day. The fog will hamper your view otherwise. Fisherman's Wharf is a must-see for shopping, eating, and people watching.

Quick Tips:

Before you purchase tickets at Tower Tours, check at your hotel for an issue of the City Guide. It contains coupons for all their tours. Using two City Guides for five tours, we saved . The City Guides also contain coupons for restaurants and shops. We did note that prices in Chinatown were cheaper than at the Fisherman's Wharf.

Best Way To Get Around:

If you want to use the cable cars, you must start out early. They fill up fast. The city buses will take you all over town for 30 cents. We don't recommend car rentals, because parking is very expensive: + per day. Taxis are reasonable, at -12 one way. Walking is an option if you don't mind steep hills. We found that if we were facing a hill too steep for us, if we walked over two blocks, the hill was less steep.

Grace Cathedral, Chinatown, Financial District

Best Things About the Resort:
Location is ideal. Staff is friendly and very accommodating. The furnishings are Louis XV and XVI. Area is quiet and away from all the noisy hotels.

Resort Experience:
When you enter the inn, you step back in time. Antiques are everywhere. The atmosphere is much like visiting a close friend's home. There's a living room, dining room, and sun room, all near the lobby. There's also a breakfast room, which is a wine cellar.

The service was excellent, and so was the food. Most seats offer a water view. We had seafood, but the menu has a good choice of other kinds of food.

Breathtaking doesn't even come close to describing the park. We took a tour by Tower Tours in San Francisco and left all the driving to them. If you go to San Francisco, you must take a day and visit Yosemite. You can even arrange to arrive one day and spend a few nights, and the tour company will pick you up and take you back to San Francisco. The Merced River flows through the park, and the road generally follows it. The park is full of history, because it's where the Gold Rush took place in 1849.

Attraction

The tour company employees are all professionals and conduct themselves in a very business-like manner. They are friendly, courteous, thoughtful, and informative. We took the City tour, which included Alcatraz, Monterey/Carmel, the wine country, and Yosemite Park. The driver designs his own tour, does his own research, and narrates from the driver's seat. He also recommends places to eat while on the tour.
