Certainly the first time you see the canals of Venezia is a thrill, but after three days in this romantic city with a group of platonic friends, I was ready to move on. The Veneto region surrounding Venice has a number of surprising highlights that make side trips well worth your time. Highlights include the Castelvecchio in Verona and the Capella degli Scrovegni in Padova (Padua).Quick Tips: Because of their proximity to Venezia (Venice) it might be a good idea to visit one or both cities on your way to or from Venice. They are both major cities and frequently are used as transfer points for connecting train lines.Best Way To Get Around: Trains run to both Verona and Padova on a r...Read More

Castelvecchio

Attraction

Having decided on visiting Verona at the last minute, I was unfamiliar with the sights and attractions it offered beforehand. Walking along the Adige River at night, I stumbled across this amazing castle across the water and behind fortified walls. Crossing its bridge and entering the dark fortress, I was surprised to discovered that the old castle now housed a popular art museum. Many of the artists were familiar by name, and the experience of walking through the castle at night was a new twist for this guy who had, by then, seen more than his share of art museums.

This huge first century colisseum is in amazing shape and is still used regularly for the local opera productions and rock concerts. It was quiet when I was in town, but an exciting sight nonetheless. How it has remained in such good condition, unlike other Roman ruins throughout Italy, is a wonder.

While this is not an art museum, everyone comes here to check out the famed frescoes that adorn its walls. Giotto (whose name you will become quite familiar with after spending some time in Italy) created these beautiful frescoes which have managed to keep their color and definition through the years under the watchful eyes of priests/ curators.
