All-Year-Round Sunshine

A September 2004 trip to Canary Islands by munstertal

Costa Teguise, on the island of Lanzarote, was our destination. A purpose-built resort with year-round sunshine, it's a perfect winter sun destination. It is a farely quiet place, and visits around the island are a must to appreciate its history and culture.

Places not to be missed are the Cactus Gardens, Manreque Foundation (home of Cesar Manreque), Fire Mountain (Timanfya National Park), Mirador del Rio (a view point), and Caves de Verde.

For beaches, Papagoya in Playa Planca is the largest, with a sandy beach. Las Cucharas in Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen all have sandy beaches. Take a boat trip from Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca out to see dolphins and flying fish or to the nearby island of Fuertoventura. Puerto del Carmen is the largest resort on the island with laid back night life. Plenty of good restaurants and bars. You can go diving, paragiding and sailing. Costs Teguise is a purpuse built resort and caters for famlys, there is a good beach and the area is good for windsurfing. Playa Blanca is the smallest place with a beautiful beach, and little night life.

Quick Tips:

Pick up a brochure off the sea wall for trips around the island, and be careful when buying electrical goods check what you pay for is in the bag and a switch hasn't been made .Buy a multi bus ticket from the Bus station in the capitol Arrecife, save's you some money.

Best Way To Get Around:

A hire car is the easiest way of getting around, although buses, or as they call them in the Canary islands, waw waw, they are cheap and run at regular intervals.
The Apartmen Patio
We hired our apartment from www.spanishlets.net/lanzarote.asp. The apartment had two bedrooms, each with a twin bed, wardrobe, and drawers.

Bathroom
The bathroom had a shower, bathtub, two hand-washing basins, a toilet, and a bidet.

The Kitchen
The kitchen came equipped with a kettle, iron and ironing board, crockery, and cutlery. What I liked was that it had mugs, as well as cups and saucers, and a breakfast bar.

In the Lounge
There were two double bed settees, a chair, SkyTV, a DVD player, and a CD player, along with DVDs and CDs. Plenty of board games and books.

Patio
Faced the sun all day, the patio had two sun lounger chairs and looked out onto the pool area. It was a very large patio with a small garden.

The Complex
This is a private compex, well-maintained, with two pools (one for young children)--a little cold--with loungers around them and a pool bar serving snacks. There is a gate that takes you onto the sea front, a 10-minute walk into Cost Teguise. At the entrance to the complex are a German coffee shop and a hairdresser.

It was very quiet when we were there. Our apartment was on the ground floor and was wheelchair-friendly, so people with mobility problems should find it easy to get around. Everything was in good order, and clean restaurants, bars, and a supermarket are on the doorstep.

Best Things About the Resort:
Costa Teguise is a purpose built resort, with one main beach, Los Cucharas. A safe, sandy beach, Playa del Jabillo is like a lagoon, and Playa del los Charcos is not so sandy and very quiet. There are plenty of opportunatie's for wind surfing, diving and fishing. The resort is well spread out, having groups of hotel's appertment's,shop.s and restaurent/s round each complex. it is an all year round resort.

Resort Experience:
The resort has plenty to offer, including lots of water sports, nice sandy beaches, and little coves, some of which are rocky, being that Lanzarote is a volcanic island. You can walk easily from one end of the resort to the other via the new walkway that runs along the sea front for three miles. Bikes can be hired, and family bikes with seating for six are available for hire, as well. There are restaurants and bars to suit all tastes, all of which are of a reasonable standard. The nightlife is pretty low-key; you will find discos and karaoke, but it is limited. Costa Teguise is divided into two sections, so it's well-spread-out.

Lanzarote is a small island--you will find no high rise buildings here. Arrecife is the capital town of Lanzarote and has the only high-rise building on the island, which has just undergone a major renovation after a fire some years ago and is now a five-star hotel. The town is developing; it has a lovely beach which always seems to be empty, a small harbour inside the centre, and a large harbour that welcomes cruise ships. The airport is here also. Large shopping complexes are on the outskirts of the town.

Restaurant

Oscars
It has good food, good service, and a nice and friendly good ambience. Food is cooked fresh on the premises, they offer a nice wine selection, and you can dine inside or out. The restaurant is called Oscars because it is dedicated to the Hollywood stars, and pictures of films and people who have won Oscars are on the wall.
