Ocala On My Mind

A travel journal to Ocala by willow

Quote: Ocala and the surrounding area has a natural unspoiled beauty missing in much of Florida. This is the Florida featured in the movies 'Cross Creek', 'The Yearling' and 'Yulee's Gold'.

Ocala On My Mind

Overview

Quote:
Biking has become a favorite pass time in north Florida. The highways and byways are planned with biking safety in mind. Of course hiking, swimming, sight-seeing and just plain relaxing are always fun. Of course the star attraction is Silver Springs and those world famous glass bottom boats.

Quick Tips:

Florida sun and humidity can be merciless, use sunscreen and drink plenty of water. Use insect repellant and/or protective clothing in woodland areas. Woodticks, mosquitoes and no-see-ums are always hungry.

Best Way To Get Around:

Both I-75 and Hwy. 441 offer easy access to most of northeast Florida.

Paynes Prairie State Preserve

Hotel | "Paynes Prairie State Preserve"

Quote:
The preserve offers sanctuary to native Florida wildlife as well as (surprise) a herd of bison. There is an observation tower which overlooks the prairie. The prairies of Florida differ greatly from those of the midwest. A Florida prairie exists only during the transition of marshland to hammock. The prairie like the everglades is a protected environment. The camp and RV sites are spacious and offer privacy. The preserve is located about half-way between Gainesville and Ocala (bring food or expect to travel more than 10 miles to eat).

Ocala is home base to The Scottish Highland Games. Ever since River Dance and 'Titantic' the games have been drawing an ever increasing number of followers and participants. The games are filled with Celtic music and dancing, piping and drumming, Scottish Highland Dancing and story-tellers. We ate to the bursting point, cried at their history and laughed at their antics. The games themselves are impressive in their feats of strength, daring and braggarty. These Scotch/Irish descendants know how to celebrate!

Rawlings home and what's left of her orange grove at Cross Creek is open to the public. The cracker style house is still furnished with many of her possessions. First editions of her books as well as the Pulitzer Prize for the 'Yearling' are as Rawlings left them. The movie set for 'Cross Creek' is in the near vicinity. If you are a fan of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings or if you wish to gain insight into the history of the Florida backwoods, this is a must see. Many of the characters and families about whom Rawlings wrote still live at the creek. Everytime I tour this home, I feel as though I've come to pay Marjorie a visit.

Silver Springs

Attraction

Quote:
All the scenery and animal life are real and free ranging. The boat and jeep tours take special precautions not to disturb the alligators, monkeys and other wildlife who live at the springs. Visitors are allowed to hand feed the fish but are discouraged from interfering with the other wildlife. We try to visit at least once a year and alternate seasons in order to take advantage of the every changing habitat and the concerts. The reptile show is very informative. All the kids want to hold the big snakes but only the animal handlers volunteer to milk their venomous cousins. Movie buffs are sure to recognize visages of 'Tarzan', 'Sea Hunt', 'James Bond' and others. There are enough...Read More

Micanopy

Story/Tip

Quote:
Say Me-can-o-pee, there that's right! Micanopy is one of those tiny Florida towns which time forgot. The whole town will fit into a good sized city block. Most of the buildings are Florida style cracker homes with the ever present breeze-way and wide front porch. The economy of Micanopy is based on the antique shops. If you like antiques, you'll love Micanopy. Many of the antique shops specialize in depression glass. I always know where to shop for my sister's gifts as she is an avid collector of this once inexpensive glassware. If you saw Michael J. Fox in 'Doc Hollywood', you've been to Micanopy. I'm sure the movie industry has this little gem of a ready-made-movie-set cataloged for futu...Read More
