1. Grimmaischestrasse and its continuation Thomasgasse divide the Old Town neatly into two. A stroll from Augustusplatz to Thomaskirche gives you the opportunity to take in most of the Old Town's attractions. Start from Augustusplatz, a huge square surrounded by the modern structures of the Opera House and the Gewandhaus and the venue for open-air concerts. Continue along Grimmaischestrasse until you reach the Old Town square dominated by the building of the Altes Rathaus. Nearby on Thomasgasse, the Konigshaus mall is a historic arcade lined with small shops and restaurants. Thomasgasse ends with the Church of St.Thomas restored in 1990. The statue of Bach who directed the children's choir for 27 y...Read More

The Ibis hotel chain is renowned for non-luxurious accommodation within clean functional rooms with private facilities at very reasonable prices. Enjoying a prime location within walking distance of the train station and the Tourist Office and just on the edge of the Old Town, Hotel Ibis Zentrum is the cheapest in the area. Squeezed between high buildings along the east end of Bruhlstrasse, this two-star hotel with 126 rooms is a stone's throw from the Gewandhaus, the Opera House and other city center sights. From the Hauptbahnhof, cross Willy-Brandt-platz towards Richard-Wagner-strasse and walk towards Goethestrasse past the Tourist Office. Turn on Goethestrasse and walk south for 30m past the hu...Read More

Leipzig visitors who want to combine an unusual good beer with a tasty Italian dinner should head for Brauerei an der Thomaskirche, a huge restaurant with an elevated front terrace a stone's throw from the Market and the Church of St. Thomas. From the Markt, Thomasgasse runs west towards the church. Behind the central park on the south side of Thomasgasse, Brauerei an der Thomaskirche occupies a prime location among traditional restaurants, taverns and coffeehouses. Before looking for a table on the sun-shaded summer terrace which extends from the restaurant's double entrance towards the park, get inside and admire the shining copper vats and brewing apparatus that fill up the left corner o...Read More

As cheap as a take-away but with the added benefit of comfortable indoor seating, Ristorante Paganini is the only Italian eatery in Leipzig's huge three-story Hauptbahnhof. Leipzig's Hauptbahnhof, conveniently located northeast of the major attractions and the Old Town is an attractive shopping arcade that was partly reconstructed and fully modernized in the mid-1990s, making it one of the best railway stations anywhere in Germany. Housing hundreds of shopping outlets that include souvenir shops, boutiques, bread and pastry shops, fast-food outlets and restaurants, it is ideal for a full meal or a snack either before taking a train to your required destination or while roaming from one shop to anot...Read More

Having arrived in Leipzig a couple of hours earlier, we were still finding our way through the medieval streets of the Old Town. From Thomaskirchhof, we took tiny Klostergasse trying to reach the Markt before sunset. The north edge of Klostergasse opens into Barfussgasschen, a pedestrianised street that leads east towards the Markt. As soon as we arrived here, we were surprised to find that the whole stretch of this medieval street was taken over by sun-shaded restaurant tables, mostly already occupied by diners who were apparently enjoying both the food and the atmosphere. We couldn't resist meandering through the limited passages between tables peeping inside the multitude of restaurants that elb...Read More
