The town itself is quite small, but it expands beyond the main streets up into the mountains, where many of the lodging choices are located. Wildlife is abundant and we were lucky enough to see elk wandering around town on multiple occasions. In nice weather, it is fun to just sit on a bench along the main streets and enjoy the people watching and scenery. If outdoor activities interest you, there are plenty of shops geared toward your needs.Quick Tips: The elevation of Estes Park is 7,522 feet above sea level. Some people have trouble staying at higher altitudes like this. It is suggested that you gradually work your way up to this height if you are altitude sensitive. However, we didn'...Read More

I truly cannot say enough about how wonderful our stay at McGregor Mountain Lodge was. I suppose that it helps to have spent the 2 nights before staying there in a tent, but it really is a wonderfully charming place. The lodge is owned by Chris and Lori Wood and Michael Hodges, who are kind and extremely helpful. Just to give you an idea of how special the lodge is: when we arrived, Michael had just baked homemade chocolate cookies for the guests stopping by the front desk. The owners made us feel at home and provided us with games, hiking resources, warm cookies, and fresh coffee in the morning! The lodge consists of 19 units, which range from single rooms to two-bedroom r...Read More

We came into Estes Park in order to find a nice restaurant for dinner. We were hoping for somewhere a little nicer than a bar and grill, but since selection is limited in the town, we chose Wild Rose Food and Spirits. There was a nice special’s menu displayed outside of the restaurant, and since it was Friday, they were having a fish fry. We went inside and asked if we could be seated at one of the outside tables. Our waitress brought our menus and took our order within minutes. I ordered the fish fry and my husband ordered a sirloin with mushroom gravy sauce. The people sitting behind us also ordered off of the special’s menu and they were told to help themselves to the salad bar. After taking our or...Read More

I am not a beer drinker, but my husband is. I am not often enthusiastic about visiting breweries, but my husband is. This is why I was dragged to Estes Park Brewery, only to surprisingly have a great time! The brewery offers free tasting of their beers if you are over 21. I believe we tasted about seven or eight beers all together. They included Long's Peak Raspberry Wheat, Stinger Wild Honey Wheat, Estes Park Gold, Trail Ridge Red, Estes Park Porter, Samson Stout, and their IPA. The bartender told us that their Hefeweizen was available in the beer garden bar. We gave him $1 each for a tip and went up to the beer garden for our favorites. I really enjoyed the Raspberry Wheat and my husband...Read More

Warming House

The Warming House is a great place to stock up on any last minute camping or backpacking necessities. They also offer rental equipment if you aren't interesting in buying certain items like packs, sleeping bags and pads, tents, snowshoes, and bear caches. Prices are available on their website. The store features many well-known name brands of outdoor equipment like Kelty, Northface, Sierra Designs, Jack Wolfskin, Mountain Hardwear, and more. One great feature of the store, which we used, is that you are able to purchase gas for your cooking stove in quantities that you need. We didn't have to buy a whole can of gas. When we realized that we were going to run out soon, we ...Read More

September at Rocky Mountain National Park is beautiful. The Aspens have changed their color to a golden yellow and the air is crisp and cool, yet it is still warm enough to wear shorts on some days.(Funny enough, only four days after leaving Colorado, the state was hit with a winter storm leaving 3-4 inches of snow in some places.) Camping at RMNP The National Park encompasses 416 square miles of wilderness that includes 60 mountains over 12,000 ft above sea level. Wildlife roams freely throughout the park and often provides visitors with multiple animal encounters. Obviously, hiking is an main activity at the park, but things to do also include scenic drives, ...Read More
