A weekend in Mystic, CT and the Norwich Spa

An October 2000 trip to Mystic by Constance Best of IgoUgo

We spontaneously drove to Mystic to view the beautiful fall foilage in CT. Unfortunately everyone else in NYC had the same idea. The place was packed! Having been charmed by the Hollywood version of Mystic, I was expecting a very different town than Mystic turned out to be.

We drove into Mystic and right into the heart of 'tourist central. Sure, there were cute little shops, but they're just like the type you'll see in any small harbor town. Nothing really stood out in Mystic so we headed back into the Connecticut countryside for some quieter time together. We stumbled into the quiet town of Norwich and discovered bliss.

Quick Tips:

I recommend driving straight to Norwich and enjoying what the town has to offer. Then if you feel a need to see Mystic can make the 30 minute drive, take a look at the chaos and head back to a more civilized town.

Best Way To Get Around:

Driving is the only way to get to these locations. During the fall, when the leaves are peaking I recommend spending the extra money for a convertible. The air is crisp and the 360 view of leaves is breathtaking.
The Norwich Spa is a beautiful Georgian style inn set amongst towering trees and manicured lawns and gardens. It consists of 70 villas and a huge Inn/Spa with rooms. Our villa was located right on the golf course and was the perfect size for two. The fireplace and deck were our favorite features. If you're looking for a real escape this is it! Children aren't allowed and the entire place is non-smoking The spa is top class and features a full range of personal fitness services along with every spa treatment imaginable. They provide facials, massages and spa hand and foot treatment and you can even have a astrology reading to assure the most 'accurate' session. Included with the treatments is access to the sauna, whirlpool, steam room and fitness center. You can spend an entire day here in what seems like minutes. If you're looking for activity, golf and tennis are available on site. The town of Norwich has a wonderful historic walking tour and there are plenty of antique shops and other shopping to fill your day.

The dining at the Norwich Spa is wonderful. They have both a healthy 'Spa' menu and regular menu selections. The dining room has a formal feel but you can come straight from the golf course or spa and fit in. We opted for the healthy spa dinner and then the indulgent dessert to balance it out. We spent an entire weekend in Norwich and didn't eat anyplace else.

Which Way?
You exit the highway feeling like you're in the middle of nowhere. Then ahead you see the aqua roof towering above the horizon. This place is huge! I'm not a gambler so was thrilled to see how much they had to offer for those of us who don't like tossing away our money. I explored 'Streets' lined with shops and restaurants and even a Broadway district! While much of it is quite tacky it's still better than sitting bored at a blackjack table.

Fall Foliage
The Connecticut Wine Trail winds through the state through some beautiful countryside. Look for the small road signs with the grapes and follow the arrows. While I'm not crazy about the wines they produce, the wineries are all unique and worth exploring. In the fall you'll not only see the beautiful leaves, but also fields of pumpkins and apple groves. Stop at one of the numerous stands for some fresh apple cider and bag of apples. You can even bring home a pumpkin to carve for Halloween.
