Ruled by a monarchy since the 17th century. The royal family struggled with the governing of Morocco up until the mid-20's, when Mohammed V became sultan in 1927. Widely respected as a nationalist, he was deposed by the French in 1953, but the French returned the throne to him in 1955. Morocco then declared their independence the following year and Mohammed V was then crowned the king. He died in 1961 and was succeeded by his son, King Hassan II. King Hassan II was credited with uniting Morocco and maintaining peace in the Middle East. He survived many attempts to usurp his control over the crown and permitted many reforms.
