Exploring Atlanta

A September 2004 trip to Atlanta by mellomood

I just moved to Atlanta at the beginning of September and have done a lot of exploring over the past month and a half. This journal describes what I have found out about this city with some Southern charms.

Restaurant

Alon's is a small continental bakery/cafe located in the Virginia Highlands part of town.

It has everything from pastries and sandwiches to desserts and a small selection of wines. The atmosphere here is absolutely great! It has a cozy Euro-cafe type feel and is welcoming to anyone and everyone.

Restaurant

The atmosphere is great, the people are friendly, and the food is delicious and reasonably priced.

This was the first restaraunt I ate I at when I arrived in town with some coworkers on a Thursday evening during happy hour. The tapas come in healthly portions as opposed to some other tapas bars in town.

The service is quick and to the point. The place really starts to liven up around 8:30pm to 9-ish when live flaminco music hits the ears. Overall, a great place to get a bit to eat, have a few drinks, and meet some interesting people.

Restaurant | "Zocalo"

This is a great spot for lunch. I get the "Combo Cuatro." This gets you three tacos - the beef, pork, and chicken are my recommendation - along with a salad as opposed to the rice and beans for the side dish. Ask for the dressing on the side. The tacos are great!

The setting feels authentic and the staff too.

Attraction

I went on a Friday night. Jeans seem to be typical for guys, jeans or skirt for the ladies. They played house techno inside and had a DJ spinning some hip-hop outside. Best to meet people outside! The crowd was so-so. Supposedly it is a bit more crowded on Saturdays. Layout/atmosphere 4.5, crowd 3.
