Desert Sand & Sea

A September 2004 trip to Cabo San Lucas by dlndavid

First trip to Los Cabos at Westin Club Regina. The property is built into the mountain side along a secluded strip of beachfront. The hotel is a sight to see, built mainly of two semi-circular towers. The timeshares are pueblo like units built into the hillside with ocean views.

To me, the properties of Club Regina are an architecture lover's dream. Taking photos of these properties can be very rewarding. It is like being an artist without being the artist. I guess all it takes is an eye for good angles and color combinations. There are also miles of unobstructed beach to walk and collect seashells right in front (behind?) of the hotel. As you walk along the beach, you will encounter many different sand types. It can go from sand as soft as powder and to feeling like small pebbles to being as smooth as glass. Very interesting. If you like to venture outside the facility, there is plenty of shopping in nearby San Jose del Cabo or plenty of nightlife in Cab San Lucas. A link to this location's photos:

Best Things Nearby:
There is a Jack Nicholas-designed golf course next to the property, but I didn't golf, as this was a dive trip.

Best Things About the Resort:
The architecture of all the Club Regina properties is a spectacular sight to see. The color schemes are a delight to the eye. All rooms have ocean views and balconies. The pools are the infinity type, with a view towards the ocean. A great place to relax and stay cool. The poolside lounges and umbrellas are plentiful and excellent quality.

Resort Experience:
The property is in the hotel corridor, 10 minutes from San Jose del Cabo (SJC) and 20 minutes from Cabo San Lucas (CSL). The timeshares all have ocean views and are very spacious and nicely decorated. They give you a feel of being at a vacation home of your own in an exotic location.

The surf can be quite strong at the beach, and swimming is not recommended, but we got lucky and had a very gentle surf most of the week and were able to swim and snorkel often.

There were many planned events to take part in, like a Mexican Fiesta with folkloric dancing and costumes from different areas of Mexico. A great selection of authentic Mexican cuisine is served. There is also a seafood night with lobster and so much great seafood to eat. If you like raw oysters, lobster, and seafood in general, don't miss this event.

SJC is a quiet little town with many shops to buy arts and crafts. CSL is a much busier place, with many bars and clubs (didn't go to Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo -- maybe next time). There are many beaches and bays to explore and see. The best way to get around is to rent a car, as the Regina is in a fairly secluded area, the way I like it.

Gordo Banks is an underwater mountain with a peak 110 feet below the surface. We anchored and descended on the line to this depth. We stayed at this depth for 10 minutes, then going to 60 feet for another 10 minutes. There were lots of schooling jack and tuna. It was a very exciting dive, my deepest to date. After surfacing, we had lunch while doing our 1.5-hour SI.

I’m still looking for hammer head sharks or large mantas, but no luck. I saw a sea lion quite surprisingly, as he was 8 miles from the nearest rookery. He was an excellent swimmer, and man, could he hold his breath. There were lots of small jellyfish around, which I avoided. But, after surfacing, I got a pimple-like rash on one shoulder. I think it may be the jellyfish larva, as discussed on another thread.

All and all, it was great diving. The people of Amigos del Mar were very friendly and safe.

The stay at the Westin Club Regina was fabulous. I ccan’t wait to go back, as I didn’t get a chance to dive Cabo Pulma. They were diving there the day we were leaving.

My wife and I fell in love with the architecture of Club Regina Cancun, so we bought our membership there. We have also stayed at Club Regina Puerto Vallarta and loved it. But for the best scenery, you have to give Club Regina Los Cabos a try. We did, and we loved it. As Arnie says, "We'll be back."

Story/Tip

There is much art throughout all the Club Regina Properties. And when you have a digital camera with storage for over 700 pictures, you could get a lot of art to remember your stay by. Sometimes, your photos become the art. Here are some examples.
