Outer Banks in the Spring

An April 2004 trip to Outer Banks by thevagabond

A strip of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, the outer banks are divided into three distinct areas: Hatteras Island, the Northern Beaches, and Roanoke Island. There are also smaller islands, such as Ocracoke and Portsmouth.

Take to the sky from Jockey's Ridge, explore in the Wright Brothers' steps, climb the many steps of the Hatteras Lighthouse, bike from town to town via numerous bike trails, kayak and windsurf on the sound, explore nature along the Charles Kuralt trail, and enjoy delicious foods straight from the sea.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Cypress Moon Inn is located on the sound in Kitty Hawk. The Inn is a three-story cedar shingled house surrounded by a maritime forest, and is adjacent to the North Carolina Coastal Reserve.

The furnishings include an eclectic collections of Turkish and Persian rugs, Tiffany glass-style lamps, framed Diego Rivera posters, and other Mexican art pieces, as well as art deco and antique furniture. The three guest rooms have waterfront views, private baths, entertainment centers with satellite TV, stereo music and refrigerators, private dining, and semi-private porches. Located on the porches are hammocks, swings, and dining areas.

A full breakfast is served between 9am and 10am. Let them know if you prefer to dine in your room, on the porch, or in the dining room.

There are even kayaks for use in the sound. Lessons on surfing and sailing are provided on request. The Inn is a mile from the ocean beaches of Kitty Hawk.

Don Gatos Seafood Grill and Bar creates the dishes of Oaxaca, Mexico with fresh Outer Banks seafood to give you an authentic Mexican meal. I enjoyed the fresh Tortas de Congrejo, which are broiled Oaxacañ crabcakes breaded with a crushed tortilla and masa, topped with a tomatillo, avocado salsa and served on a bed of cortijo cheese sauce. Bueno! Complete with a Mexican fruit soda.

Restaurant | "The Left Bank at The Sanderling"

The Left Bank is The Sanderling's formal dining room. Located on the sound side of the resort and facing the Currituck Sound, diners enjoy breathtaking sunsets while dining.

The Left Bank, name inspired from The Left Bank of Paris, France, features contemporary American cuisine that is French-inspired. Diners are seated in an intimate, 60-seat dining room.

Diners choose from a three- or five-course menu. The menus are, of course, subject to change, depending on the season and availablity of growers and markets. There is also an extensive wine list to pick from - or you can have your server pair wine with each course. Highly recommended.

The food was excellent and service was extraordinary. The perfect dining splurge.
