Overview

Fraser Island has so many highlights. The crystal blue water and pure silica sand at lake McKenzie is a spectacular sight; spend a few hours there lapping up the sun but don't give in to the temptation to stay all day, as there are more amazing things to see. Head for the eastern beach to Ely creek and Indian Head for some amazing views. Look out for whales, sharks, manta rays, and the odd dingo cruising along the beach.

And you must check out the Champagne Pools - great fun. Lake Wabby is a brilliant place to spend your last few hours before heading back to the port, go diving over sand dunes, and sausage rolling into the lake or just sitting around, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the amazing views.

Quick Tips:

If you are with a big group and want to have some fun at night, set up camp behind one of the dunes on the beach - it is the only place you can have a good campfire and make as much noise as possible. Buy your food on the mainland and make sure you get something for a BBQ (best way to cook on the island, as there is minimal washing up) If you are there in the winter months, make sure you take some warm clothes for night time, as it get pretty cold. Keep all your food in the car and don't leave any rubbish, as you can get heavy fines. Also, be careful driving on the beach, as it can be dangerous and don't speed, as you can get a ticket!!

Best Way To Get Around:

Hiring a 4W is definitely the best way to get around the island. I suggest the Palace Backpackers, as their vehicles have more room for storage. You can go with a group or hire a car for two. The driving is good fun on the island, but don't go to fast - it's scary for the other passengers. Make sure you don't spend too much time in the car, as there are some amazing things to see on foot. All of the sights have parking fairly close to the destination, however, be prepared for a walk at Lake Wabby.
