A September 2004 trip to Abilene by hersplash
Quote: I wish I could say there is a lot of culture to see in Abilene. However, my only choice was the Grace Museum.
Attraction | "Grace Museum"
The first was a history of Abilene. They detail how the city developed and how the introduction of the rail line helped Abilene. It continues detailing the progress, and lack of progress, of the city. There were model rooms from a house depicting life in the early years. That was fun to see the old furnishings.
The second exhibit, which I loved, was a display showing how cowboy boots are made. They have a replica of a store by a famous boot maker that has passed on. They detail each step on a video loop where you can see exactly how they are made. They also have a display of boots that were made for some famous people. Included were boots for George W. Bush's inauguration.
There is a fee for the museum, but on Thursday nights, it is free. The downtown area has a little festival where there is entertainment and the restaurants participate. I didn't stay for the festival, but the locals at the hotel said it was worth attending.
