Polish Breckinridge

A September 2004 trip to Zakopane by sknight_co

Zakopane is a touristy little town in the Tatra Mountains, and it is how I picture Breckinridge before the big money came in.

This was a lovely pension, more of a B&B, on a quiet residential street, near a park and just a few minutes walk from the main drag of town. It was apx $45/night for a clean, decent double room with private bath and a breakfast buffet of cheeses, breads, sliced ham, cereals, and yogurt. There is a nice wine bar in the basement. The staff speaks at least some English and is very friendly and helpful.

Attraction

There is a loop called Wawos Krakow, or Krakow's Gorge, which takes an hour and is somewhat challenging. Briefly it involves rock climbing (NOT mentioned in the guide books!). The trail initially resembles the scenery from The Lord of the Rings. Then you come upon a ladder bolted into the side of the mountain, and after reaching the top, you grab a chain bolted down at various intervals and use it to assist you in some minor rock climbing. Not terribly difficult, but a complete surprise. There are also other caves you can explore, if you don't mind getting very muddy.
