Quote: Eritrea is known as a war-torn, arid land in an area of famine and deprivation. In actual fact, the landscape is beautiful and varied, the people the friendliest in Africa, and the travel remarkably easy and hassle free. I enjoyed the country tremendously over three amazing weeks.

Although Eritrea has no World Heritage sites, five-star hotels or developed beaches - or perhaps because of this - it is one of the most rewarding destinations in Africa. It has one of the most inhospitable deserts in the world, peopled by primitive nomads - for the adventurous - or an art deco capital (Asmara) with sidewalk cafes serving cappuccinos and cold beers for the more sedate traveller. The battle scars of recent wars with Ethiopia are everywhere - rusting tanks litter the landscape and bombed-out buildings can still be seen. Those unfamiliar with Cairo will not realise that it is pretty cold in winter. The builders of my apartment block obviously didn't realise it either, as there was no heating and the wind was whistling through my (closed) windows. It was coming up to the Christmas break, and I was wondering where I could go on holiday that would be warm but not too far away.
