Northeast Brazilian Coast

Overview

If you are going to Brazil, I recommend skipping or shortening a trip to Rio and heading for the Bahia state and any one of its coastal towns. Trancoso is a quaint village with great food, great music, and friendly people. The main square is flanked by an incredible old church and there are numerous little shops, restaurants, and galleries. Great nightlife, plenty of younger folks around. Good street bazaars. Days are spent by the beach, just a short walk from town. Itacare, a surfing town a day's drive north of Trancoso, is even better. More of a laid back surfer vibe, and not as upscale though development is encroaching on this special place. In Trancoso, we stayed at an amazing place called Estrel A'gua, a little upscale but definitely worth it. The beach was just steps away, and there were romantic rooms and delicious food and drinks.

In Itacare, we stayed in a more traditional pousada with one bed and one bathroom. It was called Pousade Belfort and owned by one of the better-known local surfers. It had a pool and a great Brazilian breakfast every morning.

Estrela D'Agua

Bahia, Brazil

Surfing Paradise

Attraction

Itacare is a major surf town in Brazil that is fairly undiscovered by the outside world. It is remote and has a heavy local scene, but everyone is very friendly. The main break, one-fourth a mile from town, is the biggest and the sight of one of the Brazilian pro-tour competitions.

Many nice beach breaks, 3 to 9 feet, with some bigger swells. Best spots are hidden and a short bus ride from town. Check out South to South surf shop or any one of the spots on or just off of the main drag for rentals/information.
