The North and South Downs are alone worth hiring a car to see them, since, like most natural sights, they are rather inconvenient to visit using public transport. Your other option, if you are fit enough and have plenty of time on your hands, is to hike your way through the breathtaking region. Geologically and geographically speaking, the downs are rounded and grass-covered chalk (although not always) hills.
