A September 2004 trip to Sydney by cruvers

A couple of weeks in Sydney fly by as I see the sights and arrange a European holiday.

Darling Harbour and Circular Quay (with Opera House and Bridge), Botanical Gardens and the Domain, Art Gallery of NSW, day trip to Manly on the ferry.

Quick Tips:

Head to Circular Quay on a weekend for quality street theatre, or for something a bit heavier, head to Speaker's Corner in the Domain for political rants from 2:00 to late. Shop at Paddy's Markets for cheap fruit and veg, or head to the Rocks Markets for overpriced Australiana.

Best Way To Get Around:

Trains, buses and ferries are all convenient, but fairly expensive compared to Canberra or Perth; trains aren't always reliable either. If you stay in the city centre, almost everything your average tourist will want to see will be within walking distance anyway.

Attraction | "Ghost Tours"

Take a walking tour of the Rocks area of Sydney and be told about haunted houses and ghosts as well as a general history of the area - not too spooky, but very interesting. Free beer at the end of the tour from a nice Sydney pub is a bonus.

Attraction | "The Domain and Botanical Gardens"

Magnificent gardens, huge lawns and an overpriced cafe for your standard park fix, but also a great succulents garden, fern garden, rainforest area. A colony of bats roosts in the gardens and can be seen hanging from trees in the lower gardens. The pond is also interesting with its ducks, fish, eels and assorted other water birds, constantly fed by tourists.
