Scenic Glacier National Park

A May 2004 trip to Glacier National Park by janfw

Enjoy wide-open spaces, snowcapped peaks, and clear cold lakes reflecting the beauty all around. Driving "The Road to the Sun" is a must with lovely vistas around each bend. There are areas to park and stop to hike or bike. The trails vary from easy to strenuous.

Driving "The Road to the Sun" presents you with vistas of roaring creeks, waterfalls, snowcapped mountains, glaciers, and sometimes glimpses of wild life. Big horn sheep and mountain goats can be seen in some areas. We rounded one bend, and there before us was the most beautiful reflection of the mountains, sky, trees and clouds in the water. It was hard to tell which was real and which was the reflection. We pulled into a parking area and just marveled at the beauty surrounding us. I took a lot of pictures to remind us of that time and place.

Quick Tips:

Dress in layers as it's cooler in the morning, but warms up as the day progresses. If you go in May, bring a picnic lunch with you, as restaurants aren't open until Memorial Day weekend in the park.

Best Way To Get Around:

You can drive your own car in May, and that allows you to stop when you wish for as long as you wish. If you like to bicycle, there are areas to park, and then ride.

Best Things About the Resort:
It is located within a half hour drive of Glacier National Park. The people at the resort are friendly and very helpful. They go out of their way to get answers for you.

Resort Experience:
There is a golf course right on the property and it is well maintained. They have a lot of activities planned every week. One that we enjoyed was a wine tasting party. They also had a welcoming party with fruit, cheese, and other finger foods. They gave away prizes if you had a lucky number. There is an indoor and outdoor pool. Several hot tubs are located throughout the resort. One is right next to the clubhouse and the others are in more secluded areas near the units. The units themselves are spacious and in excellent shape. You can connect to the Internet through the phone line, and if your provider has a local phone number, there is no charge. The restaurant at the clubhouse has excellent dinners.

Attraction

This trail is a boardwalk trail that's fairly level. It winds its way through a forest with a bridge that goes over a creek where you can see a lovely waterfall. At one point the path goes on each side of a huge redwood. We walked at a leisurely pace, and it took us about 40 minutes with stops for pictures along the way.
