Fun to do nothing in Cabo

A December 2003 trip to Cabo San Lucas by Bobbyoyo

Staying at a time-share, we found the most fun in doing nothing but sitting on the beach all day long. Of course, it took me three days to figure this out after going para-sailing, on an ATV road trip, and to a timeshare presentation.

The best thing about Cabo is sitting on the beach and doing nothing. We went on a boat ride around the area, but it was just OK. We went parasailing; that too was just OK. My daughter went jet skiing and enjoyed that a lot. We went on an ATV tour (please read about it in activities). This I do not recommend.

Quick Tips:

All water activities can be set up right on the beach. There are plenty of vendors. We found everyone to be fair and honest.

Best Way To Get Around:

In Cabo, we took taxis or walked. You can walk along the beach, but it's hard on your feet if you are going a long distance. The best are the water taxis
Because we traded into VDP (we do not own there), our one bedroom had no view and little light. It was clean and comfortable and had two bathrooms. There were two TVs with cable and the kitchen area had pots, pans, china, and silver for four. The floor thoughout the unit is stone, but it was slipery when wet.

There is a grocery store at the hotel; sometimes it was well-stocked, other times, it was not. There are two pools on the property, one was for a more mature crowd, the other had afternoon games and volleyball that was geared toward singles. The hot tub was big, but was very crowded with singles with a drink in hand. We hung out at the beach, which was very peaceful. At night, there is music, and, if your room faces the pool, you will hear the music - it's pretty loud.

The staff was very nice and upbeat. Of course, everyone wants you to buy a timeshare. We went on their presentation and decided not to buy. We own one timeshare and for us, one is enough. We didn't feel we were being pressured, but, word to the wise, if you feel you are not in the market for a timeshare, pass on the presentation.

The food at the hotel was good, not great. Stay away from the luncheon buffet - the food sits out in the sun too long. The only day I ate from the buffet was the day we were leaving, and I got sick on the way to the airport. Nightly, there are theme buffets - Mexican, Seafood, and more. For the money, you can do better at a restaurant.

VDP is a nice resort. We made friends on the beach, and we are going back for Christmas '04.

Hotel | "VILLA DE PALMAR"

Best Things Nearby:
Right on the beach, horseback riding, para-sailing, water taxi, jet skiing, boating. Restaurants on the beach.

Best Things About the Resort:
Close to the action, but it is the last hotel on the beach. The staff was very professional and helpful.

Resort Experience:
VDP is clean and comfortable. There are three, nine-story buildings. All units have a patio. Remember, this is a timeshare. They want you to buy.

Because we traded in to this resort, we felt we did not get a very nice unit. The best units are reserved for those who own there. Please read my comments in accomodations.

Restaurant | "The Trailer Park"

The Trailer Park is a Cabo tradition. The food is good and the owner is there to take care of you.

The food is a little pricey but fresh and tasty. I had a lobster, which I enjoyed, while my wife and kids had fresh fish. The menu allowes you to sample a few different items on the same plate. You can have lobster and shrimp or chicken, etc. They have great guacamole with salsa and chips. We were there during Christmas week, but we found the restaurant to not be very busy. I wonder if the prices were too high or if there is a lot of competition.

This is an open-air restaurant where you sit outside under the stars. The Mariachi band played and we sang along with them. The restaurant seemed clean and the staff was friendly. Our experience was good. I probably would visit The Trailer Park again just to kid around with the owner, a real character.

Attraction

BE CAREFUL! ATVs can be fun, but honestly, they are very dangerous. The ATVs were located about 30 minutes North of Cabo. It seems there are about three or four companies running these tours in the area.

We rode the ATVs through the hills and bluffs near the beach and on the sand. We tried to be careful. We got separated from our group for about a half hour. The guide didn't seem to care about our group. A teenager in our group did flip his vehicle, but he was not seriously hurt - really lucky.

We were exhausted after the 2-hour tour. Don't mean to be a put down on this very exciting activity, but just know that you can kill yourself on those things!
