The other Dublin--Dublin Texas

The Dr. Pepper Bottling PlantMore Photos

Dublin is a wee little town, south of Granbury Texas on Highway 377 at Highway 6. About as big as a minute, it has a lot going for it. Most people go there for one reason: to buy a REAL Dr. Pepper. I went there, with friends, to see the famous Dr. Pepper Bottling Plant. We had fun! Surprising shopping for antiques & clothes.

The American Quarter Horse
You have to tour the Dr. Pepper plant, built in 1891 and still in business. Then have a soda at Old Doc's Soda shop in the Dr. Pepper Museum. There are a few other things to do in town.

Quick Tips:

You can shop for antiques and art. I'm afraid Dublin has been 'found' by the artsy set.

Best Way To Get Around:

You have to drive to get there. Then you can walk around.

Due to a friend having had an accident, we spent 5 hours in this soda shop! Well, they were very hospitable to us. We tried out a lot of the ice cream treats, all the old-fashioned traditional stuff and it all tasted really good!

We also had freshly made sandwiches and a lot of Dr. Pepper. This place is fun! You can also buy a case or more of real Dr. Pepper to take home and enjoy at your leisure. It won't last long though, it really does taste better. They also take telephone orders and ship Dr. Pepper and Dr. Pepper souvenirs almost all over the world. You don't want to know what the shipping costs on a case of soda. This is a good place to bring your children.

The American Quarter Horse
The highways in this part of Texas link together the county seats going back to the days when farmers and ranchers had to shop and bank locally.

Like beads on a chain, these small market towns link together vast areas that geographically get more and more interesting as you head south from Fort Worth. The land gets rockier, hillier and rougher looking. You will see so many fine horses and cattle out grazing, or hoping to graze as dry as it has been. I love the rocks! The land is higher and dryer than in Fort Worth, if you can believe it is possible to be dryer than that. Secondary roads in Texas are often very fine highways. Sometimes divided, often with roadside rest areas, passing lanes on hills and well defined shoulders. The driving is easy. Which is good as you have to do so much of it in this area. When you are in Dublin you are a good hour south of Granbury--about 2 hours from Fort Worth. But it's worth the drive. Notice how far apart the ranch houses are! It's a long way to go to borrow a cup of sugar! You'll see a lot of hawks flying and perhaps a coyote along the highway--alive we hope!

At night the skies are big and bright, just like they sing in that old song. If you live in a big city, you should hang around the Dublin area to see a sunset and the stars that come out in the vast, black sky. Fantastic!

Packing it all up again
It's really nice that such a small town in the midst of the vast Texas prairie would set aside land within the town for a local park. Historical buildings have been preserved. There is playground equipment and large, shade giving trees as well. A nice place to let the children get out and run around before you put them back in the car for the drive home. Did I mention there was shade? Very important on a blazing hot day.

A very nicely done small museum with an emphasis on local and county history. Worth a stop after you've been to Dr. Pepper. This is a good stop for people looking up family histories.

For local Dublin information telephone (800) 9DUBLIN which is answered Monday through Friday during business hours.

The Dr. Pepper Bottling Plant
Dr. Pepper is a culture if you live in Texas. This brand of soda pop is the original real thing as yet in Dublin, the last place in the world, it is made with pure cane sugar from Sugar Land, Texas. The museum is on the tour of the plant which was opened in 1891. The plant still runs and if you go on the right day of the week, you can watch real Dr. Pepper (in glass bottles of course) being made. Call for details. (254) 445-3466. $1.50 adults, $0.50 children, but they offer you a free ice cold REAL Dr. Pepper as you come through the door. It's a fun tour. The young people who work there--we actually met the reigning Miss Peggy Pepper!--are bright, cheerful and enthusiastic. It was fun. They also bottle other sugary soft drinks such as grape and orange. No low cal stuff here. A ton of fun! Open Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm. Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 1pm to 5pm. Free parking and plenty of it!
